    Oct. 10th 2013

    KO. 8pm

    Wembley

Yet to be a winner between these two countries with all 3 previous meetings draws, the last one in this campaign a 1-1. The other two were Euro 2012 qualifiers ending 0-0 and 2-2, the latter a game remembered more for Rooney's petulant kick-out and subsequent sending off.

    .... winning 1-2 at the time. <doh>

Normally from these results you'd expect another yawnfest, might still happen but if the team want to go to Rio, its not a game where a strategic point is a good result.

Wasn't it also used by the Austro-Hungarian empire? Goodness they could put out a good team considering there are now at least 10 different nations that would have fallen within their borders.

I'll watch it and if we don't play any decent football Hodgson should be gone, regardless of results and qualification.

Stok fans got rid of their manager that played crap football so hopefully England fans can too.

I think they did play as separate nations (Austria and Hungary) even before the empire's demise in 1918. But parts of what are now Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Poland, Ukraine, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Rep & Romania were within the boundaries of the empire so you would imagine that they would have a hell of a team - although there were 14 languages spoken there (including Yiddish), which might have made communication difficult!

This could get interesting - how about a team from within the boundaries of the Roman Empire around 100 AD. Or the British Empire in 1925 or....

Not sure India or Burma will add much (with all due respect). Some of the African countries could do I suppose. Now the Roman one could be spectacular. Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, England. Did they get to Wales. Add Bale to Spanish players (<grr>) and Italians and Ronaldo. Takes the British empire hands down.

The British empire could have one hell of a cricket team, but only Holland to play against?

The teams could contest the 'Empire Cup' - make a better World Cup tester event than the thing they held in the summer?

You are right, and also the Russian Empire.
IN the case of the Austrians their monarchy was also head of the Holy Roman Empire. The two heads of the eagle represent state and church ruled by one monarch .
It was a direct link to the Roman Catholic church .

In Orthodox Christian countries such as Montenegro , Serbia, Russia , it represents a link to the Byzantine Church, a Greek speaking Empire based in Constantinople ,
till 1453, but their legacy continues .
IT is the flag, symbol of the Greek orthodox church on a yellow background and can be seen flying outside all churches .
Surprisingly Albania use it on their flag but are mainly Muslim. They were part of the Byzantine Empire till they
were converted to the Muslim religion when they come under the control of the Ottomans .

    Sorry for the cod history.
My fav would be a classical 11 during the golden age of Athens .
    Maybe the brainiest team ever.
