Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could be a doubt for the World Cup, according to media reports in the country.

The 27-year-old Liverpool striker will have keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to his meniscus, says Uruguayan broadcaster Tenfield. Recovery normally takes between 15 and 20 days, adds the report.

Uruguay play England on 19 June in Sao Paulo after their Group D opener against Costa Rica on 14 June.

Suarez finished as the Premier League's leading scorer this season with 31 goals, despite missing the opening five matches through suspension. He also finished as top-scorer in the South American section of World Cup qualifying, scoring 11 goals as Uruguay finished fifth in the continent's nine-team group. Uruguay subsequently secured their place at the finals in Brazil by beating Jordan 5-0 in a play-off.

Suarez is a proven performer at major tournaments, helping Uruguay to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and scoring four times as his side won the Copa America the following year. His partnership with Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is a key part of coach Oscar Tabarez's plans.

good news for England but you want to watch the best players play in the big tournaments so I hope he makes it. I think Uruguay are massively overrated though here by people who only know Suarez, Cavani and their front line, they performed badly in the qualifiers and have an ageing defense

Yeah, I hope he's not injured, we might need a good performance from him against Italy.

Radio this am said having cartilage surgery and hoping to be back 4 to 6 weeks in time for World Cup. If he is really having cartilage surgery, I can't see that myself unless incredibly minor.

Uruguay's games are on 14th (Costa Rica) 19th (England) and 24th (Italy). If it's a four week recovery time, that really only lets him back for the Italy match. If it's as we are hearing, I'd be very suprised to see him back before then.

Serves him right, he cheated Ghana out of a World Cup semi-final four years ago and was then laughing in the tunnel when they missed the penalty. Divine retribution perhaps?...
