    Whats so bad about it?

Is it any worse than claiming a penalty or free kick? Or trying to talk a player into the book?

    Is it worse than diving?

Why do people think its a major problem?

    It's not a major problem.

I just find it embarrassing and childish to watch...

    I dont see why?

Its no different to asking for a penalty or free kick imo.

    nothing childish about either.

i also think players do it as a way of telling ref how ****in stupid they are. yesterday for example, downing should of been booked at least for that dive. the FA should be talking about it today. Downing should be made an example of. Evra was right to wave the card as everyone could see the ref got it wrong. I mean evra could of been booked for that at the end of the day.

in other cases it is a bit silly, like when a player dives and then waves the card. Thats should be an instant red if the ref is aware of it or a 1 match ban after the game.

it would soon sort out who is lying and who is being honest on the pitch.

As is a player getting booked when a player cons the ref with a dive.

The player should have every right to wave the imaginary card just like thy ask for decisions all over the pitch.

I agree, card waving is just as bad and unprofessional as diving.

And when someone dives they should be booked, ergo card wavers should also be booked.

Players should also be booked for asking the ref for cards, penalties, fouls and anything else imo. Football should be more like rugby - only the captain is allowed to approach the ref. The FA and FIFA need to stop coddling players and urging referees to "understand the pressure they are under". The ref is their official, not their ****ing lifestyle councillor...

Yeah but it's the ref's job to make the decision and the players job to play football. A mixture of the two will just be chaos...

It happens from time to time but I wouldn't say it's a major problem. It's just a silly childish reaction.

At the end of the day, ref's and players alike are only human so it's no big deal. People get things wrong, that's life.

Hate players doing this even when it will benefit Utd. Any player doing so should be automatically booked themselves.

I see no problem with it.

if the refs could actually do their job then there wouldnt be any need and therefore the blame lies with FA and the Refs association.

Players know the game better than refs anyway.

Card waving is an act of influencing the ref. Which is deplorable in any form, embarrasses me when I see United players influence the ref. It merits a booking in itself, in my view.

    No its not.

If a player dives he should be booked. Simple as that. Waving a card to show the ref this is the rule as set by the football association is not influencing but indicating the rules to the ref.

There are MUCH worse things in game.

Really dont get the problem with it at all. Its one of the smallest problems in the game.

Ok, but you can't trust the players judgement when things get heated ( I know sometimes you can't trust the refs, but that's beside the point atm). Where do you draw the line? Do you want players waving invisible cards around for any competely legitimate challenge? Whether or not the challenge/simulation was out of order or not, and the ref missed it, waving cards about is still influencing the refs decision, right or wrong.

i know when I see players from a team like Barcelona for example, who abuse it something rotten, it pisses me right off.

Barcelona wave the card when they have dived. Its a blatant attempt to cheat the ref.

yesterday Evra was 100% right to wave the card.

I maintain this is all the governing bodies fault though. They clearly dont do a good job training refs or making sure they can handle the high pressure in top level football.

if they could there wouldnt be any of this.

Nice to see that UIR is open to debate...

You shouldn't do anything to influence the referee's decision. It's in the same category as diving and slightly worse than claiming a throw in or corner, because those don't constitute a card being shown.

Next they'll be tapping their wrist asking the ref to blow up for full time whenever they feel they've had enough.

All I am saying is that in certain circumstances the ref gives a free kick and doesnt give the card.

I know you will mention the rio incident and you would have a point. I will still maintain that Adam dived and thats and end of it. The ref ****ed up.

In downings case, he needed to be booked. There is no 2 ways about it. Yes Adam and Young should of been booked but if you compare their dives to Downings its like they really were shot. Thats how bad downings dive was.

If that was an opposition player would you not think it deserved a yellow card?

Who are you answering? Nobody has made any specific references here apart from you.

What it's boiled down to is that you think Adam and Downing dived and that Downing in particular should have been booked.

Why even make a thread about 'imaginary card waving' being acceptable, when the above is all you're really trying to say? Stop making all these claims about the education of referees on the back of a couple of isolated incidents that you happen to have an issue with.

Everyone here apart from yourself agrees that pretending to wave a card is influencing the ref, and so shouldn't be done. That's the long and the short of it.

You said that it's not influencing the ref, but merely reminding him of the rules...what's the difference? Either way, you're attempting to do his job for him.

Evra wasn't booked for it anyway. Few players are.

I love how pent up Liverpool fans are getting over Evra doing this. Suarez does it every single game I see him play. No exaggeration.

Seems you didn't watch the game this weekend, because he didn't do it then.
Seems you also didn't read this thread properly. Nobody (that include Liverpool fans) apart from UIR has specifically referred to Evra. Everyone has commented on card waving in general. Don't turn this into something it isn't.
