Watmore watched from the stands at the Stadium of Light last night as Sunderland Under-21s suffered a 2-1 defeat against Celtic to leave them on the verge of elimination from the Premier League International Cup. The winger had limped off in Sunderlandâs first group game in the competition against Villarreal last week, with subsequent scans showing he had fractured his fibula â an injury expected to keep him out for four to six weeks. Itâs a blow for Watmore, who has been the stand-out performer for the U21s this season and had been training with the Sunderland first-team squad. Development coach Robbie Stockdale said: âItâs not as bad as we initially thought. âBut when you look back on the video, it was quite a meaty challenge. âOn the bright side, it could have been a lot worse. âHe had been on fire. âBut heâll come back stronger. Itâs just at the wrong time for him.â --------------------------------------------------------- I suppose it's partially good news that it's 4-6 weeks as it's obviously a hairline fracture rather than a "break" as such but still - the lad was looking to press on and a number (including me) wanted him involved in the first team
Gutted for him, but I was expecting a lot worse from the thread title so I'm relieved too. By all accounts he's got a great attitude so I'm sure he'll come through the setback as strong as ever.
Not 100% sure, but has he even made the subs bench this season? He's young enough and 4-6 weeks with a broken bone doesn't sound too serious.
Gutted and I am starting to get that awful feeling that things are not going his way and he will join the list of" if only they had lived up to their promise" player who never quite get there,. I hope I am wrong.
