I don't recall Nige ever being THAT negative when he was here. There was only ever one outcome to those tactics ten men or no ten men. WE'RE NOT BORING ANYMORE. I guess managers match the Clubs.
Aye, but one of them was that looping back pass. They played Beckford, Danns and Nugent, yet the most attacking players was the keeper!
we have scored 7 goals in 4 games since he took over, so hardly boring. well played today you played the extra man well and played in the right way and never panicked.
I can only base it on what I've seen live, rather than radio or letterbox view feeds, and Leicester were dull and negative today. 10 men is no excuse. I was wondering where Nige would target as a weakness, and it seems our lack of forward threat and boredom threshold were his two main considerations.
Watching the feed online I thought we were actually quite lucky to get the winner. I only found the link as we got the opener so I don't know if they were playing like that before the sending off but with 10 men Leicester were doing the right thing, sitting in and hitting on the counter. We were obviously getting more of the ball in the final third, but with Stewart's decision making being poor today we looked like our usual selves not being able to break down an opposition defence. With about 10 minutes left it felt like there was more chance of them nicking one on the counter than there was us winning it, and it's hardly a surprise that the winner came from a Koren effort from outside the box (bypassing their defence) rather than us actually breaking through the backline (I realise 10 men defending a draw away from home is a big factor in that as well). NB: I'm not being swayed by any commentary unless my subconscious understands Swedish.
It was pragmatic tactics from Nigel. I don't think anyone was expecting him to go and try and win the game playing open football at 10 v 11 and it would have been suicidal if he did. We tried to sit back and then hit on the break which was the most sensible thing to do but our problem was that, when we went forward, we never held the ball up well enough which meant you just kept coming back at us. The main mistake was bringing on Gallagher who can't hold the ball up and we should have brought on Howard instead to give us a proper out ball and to relieve pressure and also just to have someone who can hold it up and bring others into the game. At 11 v 11, I don't think there was much in it. Maybe shaded by you guys as you could see you were playing with extra energy and motivation with a point to prove. But, the red card invariably changed the game. At first, I thought it was a fantastic tackle from Mills but the general consensus seems to be that he made the tackle then petulantly kicked out at McLean and if that is the case, then I must have missed it and the right decision was made. From that point on (bar our goal) it was all you guys in terms of possession and territory but we were very organised and defended gallantly and it took a bit of brilliance to win it. Had it stayed 11 v 11, I think it probably would have been a draw. Today has also increased my desire to see us go in for Cameron Stewart in January. But I admire you guys for sticking to your passing principles given the situation and I think we've seen two decent sides who will be pushing for promotion come the end of the season. The 'negative' tactics were understandable given the match situation and I think it was the right thing to do but it wasn't to be and good look for the rest of the season because you've got a good team
Must admit what I feared most was Howard v Gulasci. I expected Pearson to target him from the off, and with a big man up front to put the wind up him. I hope that all of our young lads will stick with us in January when Pearson comes sniffing, dangling loads of money in front of them. Important game against Brum now on Tuesday.
^^^ Good and fair post. Also nice that the passing game Barmby has employed is getting praised by another set of opposition supporters after the encouraging comments by the Southampton fans.

Best bit about today is three points and we can finally put the Nigel Pearson saga behind us.. Move onwards and enjoy a local hero steer the team playing good entertaining football..
I think you are not all that far off in this post. Think our lads came of age today, there was massive pressure on them to win, and when Lesta got the goal back maybe the fans worried about a collapse; the sending off stabilised them maybe? Just really glad we got the winner. It surprised me that with all the lecturing NP must have done to warn of the edge of box threat from Koren, the Lesta lads never closed him down that time when he ran in. A real signature goal from him.
Good post Greatness, I think we'll both be up there come the end of season, but it was great for us to see Nigel balls it up a bit today.
Isn't it amazing that a manager who intimately knows the capability of ALL the Hull players today couldn't work out a strategy to win a game???? Especially with a team full of premiership players and internationals? You would really worry if he was in charge of your team wouldn't you We were fukking brill today, bossed the game and deserved to win! UTT
Just seen Roko's winner. Brilliant strike. Thought he was our best player today- and there were quite a few that were good. He always wanted the ball and i can think of nobody, i want more, in that position at the edge of the box, if there's time and space to smack it. That's why he has to play in the middle.
The thing about Nige is that he knows exactly the right times to throw men forward and he always has them back again immediately so it doesn't compromise anything, that's where the smash and grab 0-1 reputation comes from. However, he's only human and if he's playing against a side controlling the game like we were today he can't do much about it. We were just class. Stewart, Fryatt and Koren in particular were quality today.
Today reminded me of a typical NP performance. Leicester were very tight in defence and I didn't feel that the break through would come for us. I think the sending off maybe made Leicester more cautious, they have been scoring goals under NP but the game seemed destined for a draw with Leicester keeping us at bay and not having many attacks themselves. I'd say we probably shaded it today, a big result for us after 2 defeats on the bounce. Good performances from Mckenna, Koren, Stewart and Fryatt (4 goals in 3 games now) to name a few and there's no reason why we can't get a result against Birmingham. That's not to say Leicester are a bad side, they looked very solid and with 11 men on the pitch may have attacked a bit more. Nice to see some decent comments coming in from Leicester fans too. Think we'll both be up there come the end of the season.
I don't want to get carried away too much as they only had ten men but it was a good win today, Pearson should have stayed with us but he's history now, and will be history at Leicester soon too
I'm sure Leicester will be in the mix, but I have to wonder, how many better teams than us are there in this league? Even when we lsot a few games lately, we've totally dominated most of them, Southampton being the exception but even there we were very unlucky. We can definitely have a good go at the playoffs this year and maybe even automatic promotion, there's only West Ham who I think are definitely better than us.
Both West Ham and Southampton lost today. West Ham have the best squad, but they're not invincible and will drop points if teams take the game to them like we did (but obviously taking your chances!). We've nearly played all the teams in the league now and the fact the league itself is so close speaks for itself. It's pretty close and any of about 15 teams could take them. Leeds look like the team to avoid playing just now, but we all know they're susceptible to a drop in form by February/March! But I agree, there's no reason why we can't go for the top 6.
