Great win today, but should we have had a penalty? It looked a dead cert to me when Gaston was brought down the box, but they never showed it on MoD. Did anyone else see it on Sky or Internet and what was the consensus?

Odd that neither shout was included in the highlights. I couldn't tell at all from the coverage on the stream I was watching but gut feel told me the second was a penalty.

Penalty. The ref a few mins later gave Newcastle a freekick in saints half when one of their players pushed the ball past one of our players and went over his knee.... absolutely no difference to what Ramirez did.

the one where he tried to stay on his feet and ended on his knees was surely a penalty?

Whispering Dave was dubious about it on the radio. But as Nigel would say, penalties and offsides go against you sometimes and making excuses ain't worth any points. We could have had a penalty against Swansea, but we also could have scored more than one goal when we were dominating. Today it was academic.

Contrast with Martin O'Neill yesterday, guess which of the four West Brom goals was responsible for his defeat? Yep, it's the debatable penalty one.

For me I'd have to say penalty on gut instinct. Only saw it on a grainy stream though so I wouldn't want to call it definitively though.

Once again it's somewhat of Boy Who Cried Wolf though unfortunately. Then again we probably could have cried rape and the ref wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

Neither looked like particularly great shouts to me I have to say.

First one was more promising i thought, second one he was caught but also lost balance, so id say it wasnt. Was pretty outraged at the first though, they said he went down too early, but if someone stops and body checks you, what can you do? cant exactly shoot can you, for me, a pen.

Hate to say it but the 1st was a dive and he was lucky not to get a card.

    The 2nd.....I've seen them given!

Worse then not having a pen was the linesman calling Rodriguez off side.

The first one, last season would have been stonewall pen. Refs now are giving less when It's obvious the player has gone down easy. Second was definitely not. J Rod's goal should have stood though

It's interesting and just goes to show how difficult a job a ref has. The first one to me was a Cretans i don't think Gaston is a diver and he had a great chance to shoot so why would he dive? But I guess we all see it from different angles and perspective. I thought we were great today and could have scored more

Gaston is tarnished by association for refs. He's Uruguayan... Just like Suarez.

I thought 1st was a dive, and 2nd looked like he tripped over the ball morew than the Newcastle player!

I sit right next to the press box so I can turn round and see their little LCD TVs that each seat has now that shows all the replays. The first one stonewall penalty. The second 50/50 - in real time I wasn't sure, but slow mo showed he was caught - but the ref saw it in real time......

I thought this but then there has been no mention so far on either MotD 2 or in The Guardian article. Had the result been different, I feel the penalty decisions would have played a more central figure in post-match coverage but as has already been said, the result proved the decisions pointless in the end.

It always seems harsh to me when a player scores a legitimate goal and it's ruled offisde. There are loads of these every season but there never seems much outcry or the inevitable call for technology. Whereas you only get a few goals incorrectly not given for dodgy line calls, yet every single one causes a media frenzy. Had Rodriguez's shot hit the underside of the bar, bounced back from over the line but been not given it would have been headlining this morning. But it's exactly the same, certain goal not given.

I guess technology to improve offside decisions would be pretty difficult to implement, but if it could be done it would actually improve the game beyond just getting more decisions right, as it would reward the skill of forwards timing their run perfectly.

first was a definite penalty, it was right in front of me.

for those of you saying it is "irrelevant" that we didnt get one, are you crazy?! you won't be saying that when we get relegated on goal difference. every goal counts and every penalty is welcome when it is legit!!

The first was a Penalty IMO after watching it several times on Sky replays, it would not have been obvious to the Referee but the lino should have noticed the contact. The second far more difficult to call, Rambo was already going to ground when both defenders closed in and made contact, it would have been harsh to award a Penalty, neither were deliberate dives, but this player has a high c of g and his momentum will always cause him to topple in these circumstances.
