This used to be a series run in a Sunday newspaper and always fascinated me. There are some very intelligent people on here so I would love to hear their views.

How can he prove that something/someone does NOT exist? <doh>...

Really? Sarcasm is usually picked up by the tone of voice used. Obviously I don't enjoy that 'luxury' with your good self.

    Excuse my faux pas...<ok>

    Seriouis answer yes.

Our ancestors had technology far in advance of what they should have, if someone gave it to them then they would have been seen as Gods (plural) by our human forebears.

Why do people believe God lives in the sky? Maybe because those ancient peoples had contact with beings from another planet who would of course have landed here in ships that came out of the sky and the tales of Gods from the sky were handed down through the generations.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this. When you look at our Solar System in the context of the Galaxy and then think that there are supposedly endless Galaxies, to think that the inhabitants of our tiny planet (which pales into insignificance in the grand scale of things) are the most intelligent beings in existence is, to my mind, the height of conceit.

The rate of technological progress on this planet in the last 50 years is frightening. Why is this so compared to the previous 50 years, and the fifty before that, and the hundred before that, and the thousand before that?

    Mind boggling.

The pace of advancement in technology is staggering, we went from our first flying machine (that we know of) to walking on the moon in 66 years. Imagine what alien civilisations could have achieved if their technologies had been developed over Millennia.

I happen to believe that Earth has had many ancient civilisations whose technology was wiped from history in some great cataclysmic event.

A recent example in our history was concrete, the Romans knew of it's existence yet it lost to civilisation for 13 centuries.

We're mistaken in thinking that we are at the pinnacle of knowledge - that understanding happens in a chronological fashion. We also devalue many ancient systems of knowledge and write them off as 'primitive' and 'simple beliefs' - Herbalism, Shamanism etc, when many of these ancient systems of knowledge are now being replicated and confirmed in what we're finding in modern science. In the end, science is just another belief system, no less or more 'true' than ancient civilisations world view - just another way of making sense of the world around us.

On the point of extra terrestrial life. It is a simple law of probability that says we are not alone in the universe. Whether aliens have visited this planet? We need to think outside of the box of simple three dimensional space / time and linear travelling distances. Think worm holes, bending the fabric of space, inter dimensional travel.

Maybe God wasn't so much astronaut as Psychonaut.......
