Good afternoon Gasheads! Saints fan in peace.

My first question is this... At the time of his departure, did you think £1,000,000 for the services of Lambert was a bargain for Saints, or a good deal for Rovers? And how has your opinion changed/developed in the past 2 years?

It would be fair to say that a few eyebrows were raised amongst Saints fans when we splashed out a seven figure fee for a player who hadn’t proven himself at a level higher than the 3rd tier, especially as it was so soon after us being in administration. One thing is for sure though, and that is that it certainly showed the ambition and intent of our new owners to go and snap up the best striker in the league, but... Was it a risk for us? At the time perhaps, some may argue that indeed it was.

However, hindsight is a beautiful thing and it has since come to show us that Lambert was an absolute bargain. 99% of our fans would label him a club legend, and I for one would struggle to find a single reason as to why that could not be seen to be the case. He has become invaluable to us.

2 years and 2 months on, when you look at the Championship table you will see Southampton sitting pretty at the top of the tree, with 7 wins from 10 games. Lambert’s just signed a new 3 year deal, and is joint top scorer with 8 in 10, including a hat-trick against pre-season favourites Nottingham Forest (as well as a further 2 goals in the League Cup bringing his total to 10 in 12 so far for the season).

He seems to share a significant resemblance to a fine wine, as he just gets better and better as time goes forth, and I see no reason whatsoever as to why he could not do an adequate job in the Premier League. His control, his movement, his technical ability, his vision, his dead ball accuracy, his finishing and his composure is that of which many players already plying their trade in the Premier League would kill for. He’s developed every aspect of his game and has worked tirelessly on his fitness and from that, we have reaped the rewards.

Just out of interest, what did you spend the money you got for him on? And did you always know he would be able to cut it at a higher level, or has he surprised you somewhat with just how well he’s made the step up?

Anyway! Good luck for the season lads & ladies. You were brilliant when you came to our place last year, very sad to see you get relegated. All the best in the future <ok> I’m sure Sir Rickie will bang a few in for you against City!

I take your point...............but by inference if £5 million isn't enough to prise him away then his value must be seen as greater.

i thought £1million was a bargain for you. i was mad that we sold for so little especially without getting a replacement 1st or ready. we only just got a replacement this season. thats how long it took and why we are down a league in league 2. he had a few years left on his contract and was top scorer in league 1 2 years running and £2million was a minimum especially where £250K went to his previous club as a sell on clause. now his form in the championship was nothing short than i expected. i actually fully expected that he could make it in the prem. i think he would suit a team like bolton, newcastle, blackburn and stoke. hopefully he gets his chance in the prem next season either with the saints or that a club takes a gamble on him.

Lambo was worth more and Maynard is never worth more than 3 million IMO. Lambert is a much better all round player, and striker yet is worth less <grr>

With hindsight, clearly Rickie was undersold. But I dont think any of us now would wish him anything but the best. He has earned it and deserves it! He was an honest Rovers player.
