Warnock reveals new owner saved him from the sack

Neil Warnock has been given a new lease of life at QPR following the arrival of Tony Fernandes.

In fact, Warnock claims he would have had no life at all in football *management right now as Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone were about to sack him earlier in the season.

Warnock led the club to promotion in his first full season and his reward was constant speculation over who would replace him once the club had reached the Premier League.

The Formula One duo wanted a bigger name to take charge at Loftus Road.

The players were *united behind Warnock and so were the *supporters.

“If they had *remained in charge I would have gone. I wouldn’t have lasted,” said *Warnock.

“I think they were looking for excuses, and after the *opening day 4-0 *defeat to *Bolton, I was perilously close to the edge.

“I can’t *explain the logic behind their reasons because none of them stacked up.

“The amount of managers they were going through defied belief and it’s harsh I know, but under their ownership we were going nowhere. If Tony Fernandes hadn’t come in it would have been a perilous situation for QPR.”

Some say Warnock is on *borrowed time in football, but at least now he is in a position to make that decision himself.

He said: “Obviously if you lose ten games in succession you expect to lose your job and *rightfully so. But I always wanted control over my *departure from *football.

“When I resigned from Sheffield United after we were relegated from the Premier League I *decided to get out of football *completely.

“A minority group of supporters talked me into the *decision. I didn’t want to sour things so it was the right time to get out. I would have taken Sheffield United straight back up but I also knew that if I lost a few games the same minority group of fans would be out in the car park smashing bottles and demanding my head.”

So why did he come back into *football?

“Simon Jordan at Crystal *Palace convinced me to have another go and it was the best *decision I made in football,” he *explained

“What saddens me is what *happened to *Palace.

“Simon was the best chairman I ever worked for. He was knowledgeable and *supportive and I always maintain that if Ben Watson had scored that *penalty in the play-off semi-final against Bristol City things would have been completely different.”

Under Fernandes, and returning vice-chairman Amit Bhatia, Warnock is now flourishing at QPR. “We have a fighting chance,” he said. “I suspect we will need to strengthen in January because we need more depth to our squad.

    “But they are very supportive.

“We have nowhere near the depth of squad more established sides have in this league.

“And when you get injuries, it’s the difference between success and failure at this level.

“The fans are understanding. They realise there are times when we might get battered.

“But you tell me how many fans would chant your name if you are *losing 6-0 to a London rival?

    “They did!”

Today Warnock’s QPR face Chelsea, and he expects a tough battle.

He insisted: “We're going to have a go at them. I have no intention of closing up shop.

“I must say I have been very *impressed with Andre Villas-Boas though. I think it’s the most sensible decision Chelsea have made.

“They are a club that needs stability, and trust me, I wouldn’t write them off for the title this season.”

But his position is by no means secure. Another drubbing and the rumours will surface again.
