Midfielder speaks about his decision to move to Ashton Gate.
Scott Wagstaff says he didn’t need much persuading to join Sean O’Driscoll’s City squad in the new season.

A free agent after ending his 15-year association with Charlton Athletic, Wagstaff admits it has been a long summer sitting and waiting for an opportunity to come along.

But he met with O’Driscoll last week about a chance to join City – and his mind was quickly made up.

In a Bristol City Player exclusive, Wagstaff said: “I’ve been off since May and it’s been a long summer waiting by my phone and waiting for things to happen, so I’m delighted to sign the deal.

“I came up to see the manager last week and had a really good meeting with him and his staff. On the back of that I knew I wanted to come here.

“The head coach didn’t really have to sell the club to me. It’s a massive club – even though they got relegated last season, it wasn’t too long ago they nearly got promoted to the Premier League.

“I’m hoping to learn a lot from Sean O’Driscoll and the way he was talking about his plans for next season got me excited.”

A League One title winner with Charlton in 2011/12, Wagstaff is now hoping history can repeat itself for him at Ashton Gate.

“I’ve won League One before with Charlton and it would be great to do likewise with Bristol City,” he added. “It’s certainly the aim, to win promotion back to the Championship.

“I was at Charlton a long time, joining the Academy at the age of eight and I’m 23 now. I felt it was the right time to move on.

“I thank Charlton for the years they gave and now I aim to put in some good performances for Bristol City. I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”

He continued: “I’ve never played at Ashton Gate before, but I remember playing the last 20 minutes on the final day of the season against City at The Valley.

“You can see how the coach likes to play good passing football and hopefully we can continue that in the season ahead.”
