Aston Villa target £8 million signing of Charlie Austin

Aston Villa want to sign the Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin in the January transfer window as they battle to stay in the Premier League.

The division’s bottom-placed side have watched Austin all season and are pushing ahead with plans to sign him with new manager Remi Garde now in place. The striker is in the last year of his contract and QPR rate him at £8m should they decide to get something for him before he leaves for nothing the next summer.

QPR may be tempted to hang on to their star striker

There is a calculation for QPR to make as to whether Austin, 26, would be of more value in their push for promotion this season. They are currently 13th in the table and eight points off the play-off places and by January the club will be able to take a view on whether promotion is a realistic goal and, if not, whether they should cash in on their most valuable asset.

Austin started the season strongly with eight goals in nine games, before a hamstring problem kept him out for most of October. He has played three games since the end of last month without scoring. QPR have won one in their last six and sacked manager Chris Ramsey on Nov 4 after defeat to Derby County.

Austin turned down moves to Crystal Palace in August and said that he would see out the final year of his contract before making a decision on his future. Having lost Christian Benteke in the summer, Villa signed Jordan Ayew, Rudi Gestede and the wide player Adama Traore. They currently have the fewest goals in the league this season, 10, along with Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion.

Yeah he'll be desperate to join a team destined for relegation rather than waiting a few months and having his pick of a dozen Prem clubs.
