I wouldn't be disappointed with Smalling and Jones starting, they play together in the under 21s so its not exactly a new partnership. Smalling has proved to be a great buy, but from what I have seen from Jones I honestly think he has the potential to be a great defender for both club and country, however I think Evans will get the nod over Jones because Fergie seems to have faith in his ability, plus he is the more experienced of the 3 at this level.
Fergie stated in his press conference that it will be Smalling at right back, with Evans and Jones at centre back.
Not sure about playing someone out of position especially when we have a natural full back in Fabio that isn't injured. I'm sure Smalling will do fine at RB but I'd rather have someone who is naturally a full back.
Me too but what I would say is that Smalling does look accomplished in that role and can contribute in an attacking sense as well as defensively. I'd prefer Fabio there but Smalling does a pretty good impression of someone who has been playing there for a while.
All good things. But he does get narrow sometimes. And Evans does this at left back as well, it's just a natural trait of centre backs playing at full back and we can't afford the likes of Bale and Lennon space out on the wings. But I've got every faith in Smalling. He has very rarely disappointed for us.
Evans had a bad season last time around. However I believe he will recapture the form he showed when he first came onto the scene. SAF has faith in him and rewarded him with the number 6 shirt. Thank goodness SAF bought Jones!!!
smalling is superb at right back and fergie would be right to play him there, his energy on the ball is wasted at centre back, I can see him slotting in there permenently once rio and vidic are back!! Da silvas have competition
