The general feeling from testing is that two teams are clearly dominant - Ferrari and Red Bull. We can't know for sure which one is best, but they both look very competitive. So if these cars are evenly matched throughout the season (like the Ferrari and McLaren in 07 and 08), who would you expect to emerge as the WDC at the end of the season? Would it be Alonso, because he is confident, experienced, brilliant under pressure, the Ferrari is good on it's tyres, and he is overall the more complete package? Or would it be Vettel, because he has the experience and confidence of being a champ, also brilliant under pressure, and can only get better with experience? Please vote and comment on why you have voted for that particular driver.
tough to say as the RB was far better tahn any other car last year. Vettel couldnt help but get pole. My biased opinion is Fernando but I really dont know. This year will tell me alot between the 2 drivers. because of my biased opinion I will withhold my vote
Alonso was awful last year in comparison to what he is capable of (I still maintain 2009 was his best season in terms of driving) but he is miles better than Vettel in my opinion. Vettel still has a lot to overcome with overtaking whereas Alonso doesn't make too many mistakes.
I went for Vettel (even though I don't like him), because if it went down to the two teams, I think Red Bull will still be stronger, and I think Vettel can cope more with the pressure in the last couple of races. And why are you ruling out Webber and Massa? Massa looks more confident and happier this year, and I think Webber has more motivation to win it this year than last. IF all four were there, I would go for Webber, simply becuase he knows what mistakes not to make whilst fighting for the championship
Vettel is in a completely different league to Webber. Sometimes Webber was the better driver but overall Vettel was faster. The fact that Webber (who had no mechanical problems in the races last year) finished behind Alonso in the championship proves that he should not be compared to the likes of Vettel and Alonso, who are much quicker drivers. When it really mattered, Vettel delivered and Webber choked. The biggest issue with Vettel was his lack of maturity on the track - but he showed great maturity towards the end of last year and kept a calm head and won the championship. Now the youngest WDC, he will be more confident in his ability and should beat Webber easily.
Reckon Alonso would have the upper hand, just because of the advantage of having a little bit more experience, give him a few years and Vettel will be a great driver, at the moment though he is making too many amateur mistakes "like the Schumacher of Benetton and the early Ferrari years". He needs some more practice, it will be great to see him drive when he has matured a little.
Vettel for me, best driver at the business end of last season. I think he has a slight edge over Alonso in terms of raw pace, and with a Championship under his belt now he has the experience of winning. I don't get the "amateur mistakes" argument at all, people seem to have short memories because Alonso had more than his fair share last season as well, particularly early in the season. Four of last season's contenders made way too many errors, Button was the only one who was consistent but he lacked the raw pace.
AbsolutelyGlorious, At the start of last season, the vote would easily go to Alonso. But at the end of last year, Vettel became a really complete driver and showed great maturity - ok he didn't overtake much, but to be fair, he was usually in front of everyone anyway. Overall I would still say Alonso is the better driver at this stage, because he has more experience and I think he is slightly better on raw pace (just my opinion), but no doubt Vettel will be the king of F1 in the years to come.
Lorca. Fair enough. I say Vettel and I'm a Vettel fan, you say Alonso and you're an Alonso fan. The reality is that they're probably evenly matched. Should make for an intriguing battle, like you I think it's probably going to be a two horse race. It's a shame Kubica's injured because the Renault looks like it could have been up there as well in his hands. Hopefully next season we'll get a four way fight between Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton and Kubica; I don't think anyone would argue those four are the four best drivers in the world right now.
