It's like the sale of any valuable asset between businesses, last minute demands being thrown in, cold feet from one of the parties or even, in the case of football, the asset itself getting damaged, or having a flaw uncovered or even point blank refusing to go.
So many elements beyond a clubs control.

Many fans forgot it's not like Championship Manager!
