I feel he is spot on raising the point that it seems to take a kick up the arse for the players to show what they are actually worth... http://www.skysports.com/tv_show/story/0,,12384_7675100,00.html
Yet another ex-player whoring himself around any media outlet that'll listen to him just so he can slag off Arsenal F.C..Some fans still treat Petit like a hero but what he did was no different to Na$ri.Adebayor,Flamini etc.etc.
He wasn't slagging Arsenal off at all. Funny how when a player says anything remotely negative he's a 'whore', but when one says something that's positive it's lapped up like milk to a thirsty cat. Would you call Bergkamp a 'whore'?? He has said more or less the same thing as Petit is saying here. The point he is making is one that has been discussed many times on this board, and I fully agree with it. When playing for Arsenal, Petit was fantastic and gave everything during a game. One half of the best CM duo to ever play in the PL.
So I guess you have no time for Bergkamp either then? He's a whore too right? http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...is-postmortem-on-arsenal-fc-and-arsene-wenger Let's just discuss the point. Why are ex players and fans saying that we need a crisis/mini crisis/ run of bad results / slagged off in the press/ 'at rock bottom' (I've used several descriptions to avoid an unnecessary argument about the term to use!) before we come out fighting?
Exactly, we are missing proper natural born leaders. They maybe talented but they come across as kids compared to our earlier squads from the Wenger administration. I think any of the Invincibles (except Cole) could potentially become captain of this current squad..... I can only think of a few that could be leaders, they would be Wilshere, Vermaelen....That's about it at the moment....
Where have all the leaders gone? Rare quality in our times and sign of the times. Perhaps it has something to do with simply placing reliance on youngsters who are and not unnaturally, short on experience and maturity. Skill for skill's sake is only part of the picture.
It's partly down to the sign of the times with the explosion of player wages and the game littered with prima donas. RVP is currently our captain but 10 years ago he wouldn't have had a hope in hell becoming our captain. RVP has been given captaincy due to him being the best player, rather than a leader. However, recently he seems to have rallied the troops well....Wilshere and OXO are the only players i can see being future captains...
Maybe it's the wrong link that's been posted. But all I've read in that story is how Petit was gutted he didn't join Man Utd . . . which I couldn't really give a flying **** about
That's true, i was thinking of Chesney. I would select Vermaelen as captain now, over RVP, but that's another debate. Personally i would select a proper Arsenal player, someone who has come through the system and who has the passion associated with it. That's why i would select Wilshere to do it. He's come through our system and has bags of passion to go with it. Gerrard and Terry for example has been an exellent club captains, thought there personal life has been quite the opposite
Erm, he said he was gutted for not joining Manu and signed for Chelsea instead after Barcelona, what's wrong with that? As a professional footballer off course you would be gutted with such a decision, Chelsea back then were not the Chelsea of today, so he made the wrong decision in joining them over Manunited.
This has been mentioned before but we're slowly (very slowy) getting a few more characters in the squad. When I say characters I mean 'motivated', rather than 'massive tool'. Chezzers, Vermaelen, RVP, Arteta are all on my list and I would probably add Sagna, Koscielny and Rosicky to that too. Should he be up to the grade I can very much see Santos being a cult hero if given time
We have quite a few national team captains in our squad, so we should have some bloody leaders. But from the above I wouldn't have Kos or Sagna as captains. My preferred choices would be as follows in order: Verm Wilshere Chesney RVP Arteta
They weren't captains per say, just players who I feel approach the game with the right attitude. Oh and yes, completely forgot about Jack. He's certainly not the sort to let his head drop!
I agree and have said months ago that Vermaelen was suited in the position of captain. Then however he was injured and RvP has since risen to the occasion. I think the history of rewarding or indeed awarding the captain's armband to a player who showed skills as a footballer though not as a leader but also those who were likely to leave, was a move in the wrong direction. To me Patrick Vieira was the last true captain. TH wasn't bad but no Vieira. Cesc certainly wasn't a leader. To be one, you need to be able to rally the troops and this was not part of Cesc's makeup. Jack Wilshere has shown that he does have those qualities and a long term stay by him would be essential. I agree too about Szczesny even if the area covered by him is limited. Micky could be as could perhaps Oxo. What I think is important is that we have the makings of a really bright future ahead. One that will easily surpass our previous 7 seasons and it will only come together if we play our cards right and have the right men in place. I'm sure we all can't wait for that. Leaving Utd in our wake will give me no end of pleasure, just as when we went up to OT and won back in the '07 season and of course when we went there and took the title back in '98.
Watch the video... he talks about something completely different to the story below... not unlike Sky
I don't think we have any leaders out there - apart from the keeper - he is the only one I see barking out orders. Your stereotrypical captain in England should be a leader, Vermaelen doesn't strike me as that. He is probably Belgian captain because he is most experienced. I want to see a captain leading on the pitch, not just by example but rollicking players and giving a sympathetic word - none of the players we have cut the mustard to be captain in my opinion.
Agree - i dont't think our team has had a proper captain for many years: Vieira : debatable Henry : no way Cesc : not in a million years Gallas : ??????? RVP : best for while in my view, but not really a captain. I am not sure that Wenger really sees much of a need for a captain - I think I remember him saying that it was not that important (could be wrong though)
