Seems only a short time ago we played these last. Can we get the same result or better this time around. Remembering the last encounter I sat there in my seat in almost dread when we were 1 - 0 up and desperate to win the game. The clock went around so slowly I thought it had stopped. Not a very good start by us this season away in the first game so you have to believe that things can only get better. I'm going for an Argyle win again and we can become Hull's boggie side. With luck......... COYG
I know the result against Cheltenham was achieved against a team two divisions below us, but we did play some good stuff in the second half in particular. Rooney said his best moment of the game was not a goal or any of the devastating dribbling of Cissoko or Issaka but a tackle from Joe Edwards which he said Edwards had no right to get to, let alone win cleanly. That’s a very important point because spirit and effort are essential if we’re to compete in the Championship. It was how we beat Hull to stay up and it was Edwards who scored the goal after a lung-busting run from RB. Hopefully, if Joe Edwards is our inspiration, we’ll be a lot more competitive than we were last time out. Dribbling….. that’s not a word you hear much in football now is it?
Hazard, Mumba, Cissoko, Edwards, Hardie, Whittaker, Bundu, Gibson, Randell, Galloway, Forshaw. Subs. Baker (gk), Ogbeta, Houghton, Pleguezuelo. Szucs, Wright, Gyabi, Waine, Ossaka. Not a very good vote for the new players....only Cissoko chosen. Not sure Rooney has any idea his best eleven yet.
Disappointing indeed, not because of the performance but because we probably did enough to win it but didn’t. We started really well. Their unfortunate right back had both Cissoko and Mumba to deal with and not that’s not fair on anyone. Randell was excellent, so was Forshaw as the game went, roaming the midfield, putting out fires and passing the ball to people in the same shirt. We could hand had a couple in the first half but didn’t and after we did score, went off the boil a bit. The crowd were reasonably happy and chanted Rooney’s name. A step in the right direction with promise of more to come, but we need to be more clinical in front of goal and at times calm down and play the simple ball.
Cissoko by the way was booked for taking his shirt off after he scored and diving into the crowd. There’s a lad that seems to have found a home.
Been suggested that Hull are one of the weaker teams this season....so we need to do well against the weaker teams.....this seems to be 2 pts dropped.
Pundits know little more than you or I, certainly at this time of the season. As far as I’m concerned, we played some good high-energy stuff. At times they were on the ropes in the first half. It’s results that matter. But this isn’t a lost cause.
Feck me lets just pour scorn on everything and say Argyle are just doomed right now. My answer to that is if the people don't like it then pi** off now. I do get a tad tetchy with all the negative crap that is spouted. We could have won this and maybe we should have won this but the performance was a thousand times better than week one. There was a fair few mistakes across the park and Hull were not that bad a side. However there was a good deal to be pleased with as well and a number of decent contributions to the game. First half we were pretty solid and created much the better chances from it. The one criticism is that we do tary a fair bit in front of goal and allow the opposition to reset or block or whatever they need to do. Just bleddy hit it should be the mantra more often than not and if it misses so be it. Second half was quite 50/50 for most of it. Compliments to the Lyndhurst Lino. He got every decision right and actually raised his flag when it was off side. Couldn't believe it. The Ref had a decent first half and I thought we had won the jackpot with officials this game. Sadly he sort of went off the boil in round two. A few decisions were debateable at least anede bizaar at worst. Bookngs seemed random on more than one occasion. He of course got the expected chant from Devonport in "You don't know what you're doing" . In all honesty sometimes I was not sure the Devonport weren't right. One decision was booed loudly though. Hardie was called offside and the kick was awarded in our own half. Most seemed to think that was stupid in that you cannot be offside the wrong side of the halfway line. Well you can if you come back from the other half and make contact having been offside with the ball in you own half. The kick is taken from the point of contact with the ball. Technically it could be in your own penalty area but the faithful didn't get tht. Anyway, not bad and a point is a point. Lets see where Hull end up with all the experts predictions when it matters.
The 16.000 people that matter and are best placed to judge went home reasonably happy I think, especially with the first half.
It's far too early in the season to be waving any team goodbye or watching them disappear at the top of the table either. It's a frequently quoted saying but lets see after 10 games and people will be in a better position to offer opinions. I was expecting the worst yesterday and was pleasantly surprised.
You have to remember we didn’t struggle for most of last year. We were in mid-table all the way up to Christmas(ish), when we lost key players and the manager. We now have a somewhat different group of players and a new manager and they have to prove themselves but we’re back on a stable footing. As Rooney said, our two league performances were as different as night and day. The two of us who were there agree there were some good things on Saturday. Also as Rooney said, if we’d been more clinical with the decent chances we made, we’d have won. OK, that’s a truism but it’s IS true we could and probably should have been 2-0 up after 30 minutes when we ran them ragged. That’s difficult for any opposition to come back from. I’m not picking on people at this early stage but Ryan Hardie missed a couple of decent chances, one in that purple patch early on, that he’d normally have scored. I’d say Morgan Whittaker has 4 decent chances on his magic left foot that didn’t even hit the target. Hopefully those two will get their radar working soon.
Seen the Sky highlight video.....so little to see that making an opinion of the match was impossible.
Hull city fan here....i was pleased with an away point against a team i don't think will struggle....enjoyed our weekend in Plymouth.....great fans, stadium and vey helpful stewards too...great night out on the barbican...our new favourite away game!!!...it was worth the 7 hour drive home!!!!....see you next season...
You're very welcome. I thought it was an entertaining game, both sides playing some decent stuff and giving it a go. It's easy to say because we have one of the smallest playing budgets we're doomed from the start, That was the same last season even though we beat Ipswich into second place in winning promotion in 22/23. Pundits know no more than you or me at this stage. What we do have is stable ownership and sound finances, with zero debt. Behind the scenes, we're starting a £21m academy. We already have 7 in our squad who've come through the youth scheme. The site for a new, larger first team training facility has been purchased adjacent to the stadium. Land has also been acquired behind the old grandstand to provide for as yet unspecified expansion. The plan has always been to build from the bottom and even if we do go down, we'll be back! The risk this season is that we've got several new players and a new manager and it's going to be critical how they bed in. Cissoko, who scored for us (and was booked for it) and was pretty rampant down our left hand side in the first hour or so was one of those new players. I think that's one tick in the box. There were mixed reactions when Rooney arrived (including on this board) but he talks a lot better than I expected and he's been out and about in the town (including the Barbican!), talking to fans and doing selfies. There's been no bullshit. That's vital in a place like this and he's played it just right.
