Santiago Vergini was quick to hold his hands up after his own goal gave Southampton an early advantage during Sunderland's 8-0 defeat at St Mary's. The Black Cats started well but found themselves behind on 12 minutes, after which the Saints ran away with the game. The account we gave of ourselves was embarrassing. We have to look forward now and try to improve for the following game - Santiago Vergini Moving to intercept a Southampton attack, the Argentine saw his intended clearance fly past a helpless Vito Mannone. Speaking afterwards, Vergini acknowledged that the own goal changed the complexion of the contest and pulled no punches in his assessment. “I take full responsibility for this and after my error the game really did change,” he told safc.com. “The account we gave of ourselves was embarrassing. We have to look forward now and try to improve for the following game.” Vergini also issued a personal apology to the 2,600 travelling fans who made the long trip to the south coast. The away fans backed their side to the hilt throughout the game – something recognised by the defender, who is determined to bounce back. “I thank the fans for their excellent support as always and I would really like to say sorry to them for the very poor account we have given of ourselves. “The first step is to accept the errors we committed and we have to be aware that we are responsible for what happened here. “We have to look towards the next game and approach it in the best possible condition.” ------------------------ Least one player has apologised and also admitted how bad they were... Find it disturbing that none of the others have apologised mind Vergini needs to be a player we need to keep around imo After some of these quotes it would appear he is similar to Giaccherini in terms of attitude
The others will apologise, I have no doubt. I was proud of the way the supporters backed the team throughout ....... Chelsea, Arsenal, etc supporters boo them off at the drop of a trilby
Fair play to the lad, at least he had the balls to put his hands up and admit his mistake, others should follow his example.
Fair play to him, the thing is, his own goal is the most forgivable incident. There's a lot more players who should be apologising for the atrocity that followed.
Spot on again bri. The Bbm commentator said "why is he doing that, there's only one place the ball is going to go"... Of course he knew that you idiot. Misjudged the flight... At least he's spoken and apologised. But there are others who need to.
You think we'll get an apology from the players? I'm not holding my breath but I think O'Shea should be preparing his statement like a proper captain would.
If a striker slices a volley out for a corner it's funny ...... a defender misjudging the ball thing isn't always worth a chuckle is it? It's just one of those things tbh. At least the 8-0 didn't happen in the League Cup Final, now that would've taken some handling, I'm already up for the Arsenal match.
So easy to shank one, we have all played footy, and all done it, easy done from a bobble before you hit it. . The second one was bad luck and then the non penalty ( Old Trafford or Anfield the keeper would walk as well ). I can see why our 11 felt it was one of them days, you lose shape, it happens, move on. Giacch, Alveraz and Coates to come back, glass is still half full for me. KTF.
