HULL'S historic ship the Arctic Corsair has been targeted by vandals.

The landmark ship, berthed between Drypool Bridge and Myton River in the River Hull, is the city's last deep-sea trawler.

It was converted to a museum in 1999 and is one of the city's museum quarter's biggest attractions.

But, after it closed for winter in October, two individuals managed to break onto the boat sometime and threw contents from the ship overboard. The Hull Land Train, based nearby, was also targeted.

Simon Green, cultural services director at Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: "The historic Arctic Corsair was boarded by two individuals who were recorded on CCTV. They threw a life preserver and its holder overboard the ship is undamaged.

"We are obviously disappointed by this and are assisting Humberside Police with their enquiries."

The two individuals also released a fire extinguisher inside the ship and broke several light fittings, according to Humberside Police.

The break-in, on Tuesday, November 17 happened on the same night as the Hull Land Train, which takes guests on tours throughout the city centre, was also targeted by vandals.

Mally Welburn, who runs the train, said it was devastating to see people raiding the Corsair and the train.

"They ripped the curtains and slashed them, and took a receiver out the music box as well," he said.

"They also managed to take things out the train and just throw them all over the place.

"It was gutting to see it like that, because I've put so much work into it recently. It's pretty devastating, to be honest."

Police have asked anybody with information to call 101, quoting crime number 2152232.

Sad that they don't know enough of their own heritage. We should do more to educate younger people in school about their local history, instead of some of the PHSE crap they're currently learning.

Typical and topical for me too. Overnight my metal front gates and metal picket fence were covered in graffiti and the gate closing system smashed. Have contacted the police and been issued with a crime event number......... 61,349,082.

I once set fire to my teachers back garden.

When we were young whipper snappers, we had a bit of a healthy obsession with making fires, just little ones mind, but fire none the less.

After making a very small and innocuous fire on the verge of the crop field we used to use as a shortcut, we buggered off to play soldiers or Jedi Knights or something in the woods once we were sure it had gone out.

Imagine the surprise upon our return to find a blazing inferno in our school teachers back garden and the fire fighters trying frantically to get it under control.

    Good day was that.

At least we were doing something productive, rather than destructive.
