Well here we are again...... As champions we've a litany of issues that have befalen the club since we won the thing but at least we won something... last night the usual suspects threw away their only realistic chance of silverware for another year. Perennial also rans Everton basically blew Moyes' only real chance of a cup and this despite their bleating before last years FA cup semi about him deserving and needing a trophy to crwon his 10 years of glorious mediocraty. West ham are focused on survival so let wigan hammer them and no doubt inthe next round wigan will be hammered as they focus on their own survival, mean while City let slip a lead and allowed villa to put them to the sword. On the other hand Chelsea handed wolves their heads as they always take the competition seriously. But what about tonight? I think utd will take it seriously v Newcastle, and arsenal in thier 8th time of asking for a pot surely will not be saying "l'm not that disappointed" if they lose to coventry? Yet i hear quite a few on 606 saying this is not important for LFC.... So which category do we want our club to fall into.. the also rans who think a league game on the weekend is so much more important than a cup that they don't apply themselves or the big clubs who take competitions seriously. City are raging today, chelsea are rolling on, ferguson will want to add another league cup to utd's tally as its the only record we've left bar europe..... and us? Do we think our boys are incapable of beating norwich away on saturday beacuse we took a bus trip to west brom and tried to win there? I dearly hope our club has some ambition and fields as good a team as we can and they put the effort in.......... win, lose or draw the only thing i hate is not trying
I think that we have enough on the bench and on the pitch to win both at WBA and at Norwich. I say this despite being hammered 3-0 in the curtain-raiser, cos we pretty much gifted every single one of those goals to the baggies. Our youngsters are showing no fear, and Pacheco aside, all are seizing their opportunities to put pressure on the senior players for thier positions. Hell, even Brad Jones is being made to look good a the moment...
I think you are mis-understanding people here MITO but feel free to correct me if I'm worng. It is not that people do not value the cup or don't want to win it. There is a difference between saying you won't be too bothered if we go out to hoping we go out. Of course we all hope for a win tonight, you wouldn't be a Liverpool fan otherwise, but a lot of us are looking beyond this one game. Given the choice, I'd like to all four competitions but that simply isn't going to happen. Given the choice now of winning the cup and finishing 8th or lower or no cup and sixth, I'd take the cup
With a view like this, you should start a thread - "If you had to win one, which would you rather lose - Community Shield or COCup?"
Most would chose to lose in the League Cup. Winning the Community Shield means we have done one of three things - won the league, won the FA Cup or finished runner-up in the league with the winners doing the double
I think bascially that the fans need to be telling these owners quite forcefully that actually you know what its not acceptable to be running the club shabbily, its not accpetbale to have rodgers saying we can't win the europa with our squad and n oits not ok if we lose this game. right now we've not got: a) any stadium plans b) no money c) a striker but we do have a) some standards left even though we're bettered since 2008.. (thanks moores, thanks a bunch) b) anfield and a world fan base c) some really good players (some is never enough) if we do an arsenal here and "pretend this is a youth development comp" and then just go for 4th.... well we are screwed. cos like it or not arsenal pay more than us and have lets of cash to spend when finally wenger got out of his cloud and spent it.... we seemingly have none of that. we need to at least try our best.
I know there is no official confirmation but it's looking more likely that Anfield will be refurbished And we do have money - but we're not going to spend it wildly on players who don;t justify the pricetag. Dave wrote a great post about the fact that we're in times of austerity. Investing in the stadium and the playing staff is incredibly difficult to achieve simultaneously which is why it's good to see our youngsters being given a good run out as we may have to rely on them over the coming years.
There is no value. Its just a nice cup to win but no team goes all out for it since Mourinhos chelsea did and that was because he was new to english football and thought everything was major. Fair play to him really.
Yeh it was nice to win. We didnt set out to win it though, we never do. Its used to bed younger players in, give them game time and generally for Fergie to have a piss about. Have you seen some of our line ups in the League Cup? Sure in the semi finals and finals a stronger team might play. Its the lowest ranked trophy any top level club can win. Says everything you need to know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Football_League_Cup_Final http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Football_League_Cup_Final Even in the final the team isnt our strongest team. If it was the FA Cup final or the CL our strongest possible side would play. As I said, nobody goes all out to win it.
so this is why ferguson was spitting blood to lose to palace and wanted to win so many i nthe past few years to surpass our record then? As per usual UIR will claim its valueless while we are holders and until he sees if utd can get past newcastle... if it becomes clear it might the only one utd can win it'll be a major trophy.... I'd not mind but i paid utd a compliment by saying they are a top club as they take all comps seriously.... maybe i should just say that while utd might be a top club some of its so called fans are more plastic than a sun faded stretford end seat.
