Something been rattling around this empty head of mine for a while.
How does a club come to a valuation figure, surely they know his real value.
Is is on a basis of who is interested so the amount is over inflated or just economics?

Many factors, length of contract remaining, re-sale value, etc, etc.

    good question...

I think that the players current performances in their specialised position or their potential to improve play a role as does their potential to fit into the team system. The number of clubs interested in them, the bloody mindedness of the selling club, the desperation of the buying club, how much other players have recently been sold for and length of contracts all play a roll...but...on what planet was Bentley worth £16m quid ?

If I was in a position in which a club was interested in one of my key players, I'd base it on (providing I was willing to sell):

The total valuation of his contract - so his weekly pay multiplied by 52 and then multiplied by the number of years remaining on his deal.

Then I'd take into consideration the reputation of the player nationally/ internationally so the attention they could bring the club (estimated merchandise sales, promotional values etc).

Finally a general fee I'd demand in order to release him from his contract early, being a key player and also basing it on the current market, especially if the player had any loyalty bonuses inserted I'd want them covered before parting company.

Does that come out at £40m for Modric? I think it does.

If they're English, multiply the value by 2.5
