Well done Commachio. Does my old(er) heart good to see this post since there was a real danger of it getting overlooked after the Jubilee celebrations. The ceremonial splendour that is uniquely British was there for the world to see over the past weekend, but those same guys on parade would be ready to go into battle as their predecessors did 68 yrs ago. British and proud.
Well done Comm, this year is one of the very few in recent years my wife and I hav'nt gone over for the celebrations as her dad landed in France on Juno beach. Anyone who hasn't been its a great trip, very sad at times when visiting the many Cemetaries which are kept in immaculate condition, fortunatley her dad survived and lived to 88.God bless him and all those who wern't so lucky.
Should be remebered around the world & a bank holiday, if it was'nt for this day in 1944, God only knows what would have happened
Great post comm. Without these brave men and womens sacrifices, from a host of nations during the 2 world wars and since, we wouldnt all have the luxury today of being able to debate freely or indeed enjoy the fabulous lives we do. My humble, sincere and unreserved thank you to all past, present and future members of our magnificent armed forces. Without you my life and that of my families would be much worse off and at peril.
I just wonder if I'd have the bottle to do what they did. I don't suppose you ever know until it happens, but I'm gald it never happened to me. Respect to those that went to Normandy 68 years ago.
Bit pissed, so i won't harp on to much, My only post of the night.. But thanks to all of them, who gave so much.
Shakespeare: excerpt from St Crispin's day speech: But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day. - http://www.rispin.co.uk/henryv.html - it stirs my loins
