If the £200m sale of Everton to US interests goes ahead, the majority of PL clubs will be owned by Americans, apparently. Raises the chances of a PL vote to do away with promotion and relegation, which are not part of the US culture of sport and threaten investment. But never fear, the majority won't last long as Villa will be relegated. Though I suspect that a few non US owners may be deeply attracted to this idea to keep their sweaty little hands on the £5bn. My US work colleagues really struggle with the concept of relegation (some like my boss, can't even say it, calls it 'regulation') but after I patiently explain that it makes nearly every game important and prevents fiascos like teams not trying so they can finish bottom and get first pick of players in the 'draft' (like the Indianapolis Colts did a couple of years ago to get their excellent quarter back Andrew Luck) they begin to cotton on.
A very worrying thought 'sb' ..................... yes, money tends to control the direction and everything else follows suit, sadly. I can see it now, Manchester City Buccaneers, The Liverpool Patriots or perhaps The Southampton Seahawks, just to name a few. Why stop there, a change of colour in the uniform department may cause a few snarls but don't worry, the club will give you a free flower pot size popcorn & coke to go, for the family.
If they bought the same catering standards as they have at the Colts, where you can get craft beers, cocktails and a huge variety of high quality food in the stadium, we would need a defibrillator every 10 yards. Cheapest Colts season ticket is $460, not bad considering they have a huge captive audience (it's Australian distances to get anywhere else), but that only gets you 10 regular season home games, you have to pay for play off games and friendlies. Just realised what will sink any plan to end PL relegation. The idea of Norwich v Stoke. In perpetuity. And anyway the US angle is bollocks because only 5 clubs, potentially 6 with Everton, are owned by Americans. That's what you get for listening to the BBC. Another 6 foreign owned, 7 if you count the Welsh owners of Swansea. In the top 3 divisions only the supporters of Swansea have a stake in their club (20%). FALSE ALARM SORRY!
Add to that the fact there isn't a major league in Europe that is a 'closed shop' and I think the chances of such a scenario are virtually zero. The only likely closed shop will be a European League but I think fans of successful clubs would soon tire of never winning it because of the likes of Barca, Real and Bayern and they wouldn't have their traditional national/local rivalries anymore...
Maybe in 20 years clubs We will see football get its roots back After all if there's a game on the TV then the addicted will watch it and that's 2 hours they won't get back Back in the UK and laughing to read that that idiot Neville is finding real football difficult Football is entertainment and has ruined it in this country IMO because it's no longer real Brain Moore and the big match? Look where we are now ? No wonder the England football team doesn't perform well in tournaments They have the Circus in our back yard I watched a local French game the other night , just village teams but was amazed at the standard of play They keep getting stronger at that level whereas the culture here is to dream and talk about the game Let's hope it goes full circle
Did you see the Peterborough v West Brom game on telly last night? Posh were by far the better footballing team, it was great.
Washington has great close control and vision , from what I've seen , posh certainly doing something right ... They were better technically than west brom
