Upson or Smith ? Hmmmm Upson or Delaney ? Hmmmm after much deliberating, yes please, the other 2 can't defend.
I'm thinking maybe this could be a good idea but obviously depends on wages. Although I like the fact we are going for young players i really feel we do need an experienced defender at the back. He's a local boy aswell!!
UPON THE ROOF................When this old world is getting me down...and people are just to much for me to take.....
Im sure there's a six finger joke coming.......but i will leave that for another ! Looks like we'll be sending Ward out on loan, you could do a lot worse that him ? Allthough im sure the fact Upson is from this area makes it more likely?
my ex used to go out with matt upson. i was better in the sack apparently, but then i've always been good at bouncing 100m on school sports days
Why do people go on about "depends on wages"?? If he's good enough for our team, and will improve us, then surely it's a no-brainer. I personally don't care if he's on £600 pw, or £50k a week...as long as he improves our team and we start winning more games.
Because I think it's important he fits in with everyone else and I do believe it right we stick to the new rules, plus if we spend alot of wages on one player it means we can't on another. I think part of the problem we had over the past few years is paying players too much too quickly when ME first took over, we probs had some important players to us on low wages and then we were suddenly signing players on high wages, I actually think alot of this caused unrest in the squad!!
I appreciate everyones points here, but what i'm trying to say is, is that if we stick to the new financial rules, then it's irrelevant what he's on. Tevez is on approx 250k a week because he's a worl lass player who can win games for City, whereas Rodwell will be on approx 30-40k a week, because he won't bring as much to the team as other players. You can't take the liberal view of paying everyone the same wage, some players are more experienced and more valuable to the team, therefore demand a higher wage. The original post asked wether we wanted Upson to sign for us..and the simple answer would be wehter he improves our team/squad..and in my opinion (if fit) is head and shoulders above what we already have.
If we have availlable finances then there is no problem paying him the going rate unless it takes up the remaining budget and we want to get 3 or 4 other players in. All transfer deals should be on the basis that wages are both realistic and affordable. The affordable shouldnt be on that player alone but as a part of the bigger wage picture. It rather pointless (IMO) spending large wages on 1 very good player if it means you have to fill the rest of your squad with garbage due to the overall wage picture.
Agreed tractor - but we'll never know what our finances are, and what our overall budget is. The question still remains..would you like him in our team, if he was paid 5k a week? And would you still want him in our team if he was to be paid 30k a week? We may well be able to afford paying one player 30k, whilst the rest are on 1k-15k, that we'll probably never know. I made the "irrelevant" quote because, for me it is. You will always get a hierachy at a club (and in every work place), that is down to the management at the club to pay players according to their value to the club. So, if we can get a proven England international in our team (and lets not forget he was playing for England in the world cup two years ago), then we should stump up the cash to get him in.
