First job- eases a Championship club away from relegation, then gets them promoted to the Prem, where, on slender resources, they battle out a fighting retreat back down again. Is mentioned in dispatches when the England National Team managership is discussed. 2nd job- takes a League One club close to the play off-places, but lets the challenge slip. Post no. 3 - achieves zilch back at a Championship club Current job: mirrors his first effort but with a League 2 team, except they fail in the Play-offs; subsequently they find themselves back in the mire and in danger of going out of the league. Where, for Aidy Boothroyd, did it all go wrong?
Could well be. I think his intial experiences told him 'this is easy, I'm really good at this'. Then the media hype him. So we then ask, where did it all go right in our promotion season, and how much of it was down to him at all? edit: I know this is raking over old ground, but I'm just impressed by the exent of his slide.
For me, he believed in his "management training" manuals too much - he believed that managing a football club was no different to managing any other business. It might be close when things are going OK, but it's when you are having problems that the manuals won't help. How can you motivate the players, board and fans to stay behind you and the club? That is the challenge and technically he was very inexperienced and had no plan B when things went tits up - I am still convinced it all started to go wrong at Watford when he lost the advice of Keith Burkinshaw. Sir GT had the advice of Bertie Mee to keep him a bit grounded, Betty lost that and I believe he lost some of the training room - might have something to do with some of the players he brought in as well!
Watford 1 win in 13 matches. Colchester 2 wins in 14 matches. Coventry 1 win in 16 matches. These were the results that led to his sackings. He has just had a vote of confidence from his chairman, so I suspect that unless thing improve rapidly he will be getting the CV out again. His ego is still working overtime, telling everyone that you only need to look at his record to see that he is the right man to be manager.
