The obvious Saints players receive the plaudits due to their goals or match-saving tackles/saves(Lambert, Fonte, Barnard, Lallana) but who do you think is/has been our unsung hero/s this season? Tricky one but I'd go for Dan Harding, Ryan Dickson and Danny Butterfield. I think all 3 have gone about their business well and consistently contributed to us, not only at the back, but going forward when they've all played a part in setting up the strikers. Yours?
Dan Harding, Morgan Schneiderlin and Danny Butterfield, all players who don't get the praise they deserve IMO
Sorry to buck the trend. They are all hero's in my book. There is no unmentioned hero's as at some time all have had plaudits for there efforts on the field. Practically all also has had their critics at some stage or other. I cannot think of any one player that has not.It could be argued that Hammond has had perhaps the most criticism or perhaps Brendy's friend Harding........In truth though they have all without question stuck to their task and the honour in my view is shared by all........So for me no unsung hero's.
Dean Hammond - He gets picked because he leads the team so well. Not the most technically gifted player in the team, but everyone needs someone like him to inspire the others when the going gets tough. Andy Crosby - the architect behind all the movement that's made us so potent from set-plays.
I will say a name that hasn't been mentioned on this thread, Guly, (although he does get his name sung a lot)...He has settled in really well considering where he has played his football before and his lack of english. He could turn out to be a key player next season in the Championship with better pitches, (it has been noticeable that his best games have come at SMS) and I can see him scoring 15-20 goals as well as his link up play improving.
Yes, I agree that he has has some bad games but this is his first season here. Generally he has added something different to the squad with moments of Brazilian class and I genuinely think that he is better suited to a higher class of football , the same as Spiderman
Guly has shown great flair and can only get better under Adkin's tutelage. He does take time to get back in the swing of it if he's been out injured, so we have to hope he has a long run in the team.
Dean Hammond at times runs around like a headless chicken. He is not a great reader of the game and often has to act after a pass etc which is why he gets caught out so often. He is not on my list of heroes.
Guly is important because one moment of sheer class can change games. When I read things like, "he scored a good goal, but..." I always think the goal is more important than whether he had a good game. He is unselfish and yet sometimes can produce a solo goal from absolutely nothing. My other choice would be Gobern for his services to Rugby
"not on my list of heroes" That does sound a bit pathetic IMHO. Football is about having a TEAM, not a collection of individuals. All the players deserve praise and all have contributed. So many little things have had an impact during the season... Jonathan Forte for example scoring those two goals against MK Don's that really kicked on our strong finish to the season.
Hammond has improved a lot since the turn of the year but can we afford for him to be doing the same next season? I do agree that the team as a whole has done brilliantly and Nigel puts his faith in our captain. I do have my doubts about Dean but would be more than happy if he can prove to me that he can do the job.
