Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling raises his hands to his temples after planting a free header into the Hoffenheim side-netting. He knows he should have done better. But wait! The ball creeps through a hole in the net and is given as a goal by the referee. Unbelievable. Hoffenheim are understandably going nuts, but the referee is unrepentant. Think a disciplinary will be heading your way, ref. That is a shocker.
Aren't the match officials meant to go and check both nets before kick off?...surely a ball sized hole in a net shouldn't be missed. Guess the ref only saw the ball go past the keeper and into the back of the net.
I know it's wishful thinking, but it would have been nice if one of the Leverkusen players had spoken up to the ref, in a similar manner to Fowler telling the ref it wasn't a penalty a few years ago.
Funny story is that Norwegian striker Arne Larsen Ãkland did exactly the same thing for exactly the same club, Bayer Leverkusen back in 1980. Only difference is he told the referee that it wasn't a goal and the ref overturned his own decission. This was against the mighty Bayern Munich so no mean feat. It should be said though that this was his fourth goal of the game so having already secured his hat trick it might have been a bit easier to disalow your own goal. Here is a reference: Arne Larsen Ãkland. "In the summer of 1980, he was signed by West German side Bayer Leverkusen. Ãkland enjoyed a successful three-year spell at Leverkusen. Just a few months into his stay at the club, he scored a hat-trick in a 3â0 win against Bayern Munich. Ãkland was in fact credited with a fourth goal late in the game as the ball went through a hole in the side netting, but Ãkland famously told the referee that it wasn't a goal. In his three years at Leverkusen, Ãkland played 101 Bundesliga matches and scored 43 goals. Wikipedia
There's been one or two 'ghost' goals over here over the years. I remember a goal in the Chelsea V Ipswich game back in the 70s that went in through the side-netting and the howler at Watford a few years back. There's been plenty of goals that haven't been allowed over the years so I suppose the odd one the other way balances things out as long as it's not against us...
This happened to the flyers in a play off game, the net go cut by a skate and a shot went, the goalies double take was hilarious. These days it cannot happen as every goal can be reviewed, good thinking eh Sepp?
Have to feel sorry for Hoffenheim as earlier this season they "scored" a goal when the ball bounced 2 feet over the line then spun back into play and the ref waived play on.....with this kind of luck they must be a shoe in for relegation!!!!
The referee cocked up badly. The linesman cocked up badly. Why didn't the fourth official intervene, even if he is not meant to? BUT, why didn't Leverkusen allow Hoffenheim to walk the ball into the net from the kick off? It looked to me that the ref knew he was wrong well before he restarted the game or was of the oppinion that he was right & everyone else was wrong.
