Jonno - I think it only got raided because the media started to highlight it on the back of the Euro elections. I understand they had closed down two previous camps and this was the worst of the lot, squalid conditions, scabies and five deaths, although whether all the deaths were at that camp i'm not sure. Certainly appears disgusting conditions but why so desperate to get here, when other countries without crossing the channel must offer opportunity?
Nobody wants to migrate to Belfast even though it's in the UK with all the same government benefits, because it's a ****ehole. People tend to go where the opportunities are.
what are those opportunities Mick...low pay topped up with tax credits and housing benefits? not sure how that contributes to the system. Why leave land when they can go to France, Germany or Spain. Why risk life to come to the UK, we've already got a load of benefit scroungers of our own, I suppose at least they will get the apples picked in the Summer once they cross the border to Dover. People suggest our own are lazy but why are British mum's with families no longer picking these crops, in the same way they did the hops for decades, what changed that system in the manual sense (excluding automation).
Because they read the British media online and think that living here on benefits is like living like royalty. That's what the right wing media tell us repeatedly so it's hardly surprising that so many people want to come here. Perhaps if the media gave a realistic portrayal of life for yer average immigrant fewer would want to come here.
I'm still sticking with opportunities (or at least the hope of opportunity). I don't know anyone who has migrated anywhere because of a social welfare system. Half the Poles left Ireland as soon as the economy crashed, despite the fact that the minimum wage in Ireland is higher and the dole is nearly 3x the UK amount.
I can't understand why they don't claim asylum in France then when they are allowed to stay, become a Frog and they can go anywhere they please in the EU.
