The Champions League's yellow cards rules will not change for at least three years, Uefa has confirmed. Seven players are suspended for the Chelsea v Bayern Munich final after six were cautioned in the semi-finals. The rules are different for Euro 2012 when Uefa will wipe the slate clean for yellow cards after the quarter-finals. I don't agree with players getting away with things but making a player miss the biggest game of his life can't be right. Can it?
Seems harsh, but if yellow cards were wiped after semi the players might be tempted to kick lumps out of each other rather than be knocked out of tournament.
I agree. People blame Geoff Shreeves for telling Ivanovic he was going to miss the final, but I find it incredible that he didn't realise! Surely it's highly negligent to have players in danger of suspension and not even inform them?
I agree with the OP. The final of any competition is the show-piece. The very best talent should be on display for both teams for the benefit of the teams, their fans, the TV audience and for the good of the competition itself. If that means extra spice for the semi-finals with players throwing in a few tackles that they might not otherwise contemplate, then great!
As yellow cards are issued for treading on the lines in the pavement or using the wrong toothpaste it is absurd. However, it is difficult to see how cards would be meaningful if they could simply be expunged so that players can play in the Final. A tricky little problem, Lamballana, and therefore this guarantees that UEFA won't discuss it!
