http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18338838 now they are saying they will book player who stand up against racial abuse. If UEFA did there job in the first place and not give the games to country with these problems players would not need to walk. I would love to see a whole team walk off. There is no way they would throw them out of the compertion
I can't see how UEFA could implement this. Surely it is the right of everyone to go to their place of work, and not feel threatened or intimidated because of the colour of their skin. I think any player that faces those situations, should arrange a conflab with their HR dept. What next? A crusade on the pitch? COYRsssssssss
Hard to see how the situation can be managed if players decide to take off without referees involvement; that would lead to anarchy or abuse at the very least. If a team are losing, it could be used as a means of mixing it up; not saying that that would be tried but stranger things have happened. The onus is on the host organisation to ensure that any racial chanting or actions are dealt with immediately and offenders apprehended or ejected, or if charges can be proferred they should proceed. I have a feeling that the recent panorama program and the Ukrainians reaction to it will ensure that any incident of this kind will be dealt with severely and with impunity.
It should be up to the referee. If a player tells the ref what's going on and asks to go off then fair enough but people can't just walk off midway through the game.
Our decisive game is v Ukraine, can you see what might happen if Welbeck or Defoe score and they face going out of the competition? I can't see any UEFA official, whether the referee, 4th official or some other rep having the balls to take the players off. We played a game in Spain a few years ago where our black players were given loads of abuse, if the manager had called the players off and said 'That's that' it may have shamed UEFA in to actually doing something decisive about it, Platini showed yesterday they really haven't got the balls to really do anything about it...
Its the rules, anyone who walks off without informing the ref will be booked. This is one instance theyve got it right. All the player has to do is inform the ref hes leaving and they will be fine.
Spot on Sooper. UEFA can say the refs have the authority but there's no way that they'd let the man in the middle be responsible for undermining their decisions and bringing the players off - it would be a complete disaster. How could you rearrange a match at the Euros? Hopefully Grinning~Cur is right - you might let your kids muck around at home but you want them to be on their best behaviour when you're out (and will pull them in line if needed). Hopefully the host countries see it the same way with respect to crowd behaviour.
Christ I'm reading on BBC that some locals were making monkey noises directed at black players at training grounds??!!
