Sunderland Under-21s saw their memorable 2025-26 campaign come to an end with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League Cup Final at the Stadium of Light.
Played in front of an excellent crowd in the lower bowl of the Jimmy Montgomery Stand, the Lads produced an energetic and dominant display for large periods of the contest. Still, they were ultimately undone by two goals either side of the half-time whistle.
Graeme Murty named Harrison Jones as his captain, with Ahmed Abdullahi leading the line. First-year scholar Joe Cowan started between the sticks.
Sunderland started brightly and almost took the lead inside the opening minute when Charlie Dinsdale fired narrowly wide from distance, setting the tone for a confident opening spell from the hosts.
Murty’s side controlled possession throughout much of the first half and repeatedly tested the Clarets’ defence through the lively Ahmed Abdullahi and Milan Aleksic. Abdullahi forced a smart save after cutting inside from range before Aleksic saw a close-range effort turned away moments later.
The young Black Cats continued to push forward and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on two separate occasions, striking the woodwork twice during a dominant attacking display.
Despite Sunderland’s pressure, Burnley struck against the run of play just before the interval when Ellis Clark finished low into the corner to give the visitors the advantage heading into half-time.
Sunderland responded positively after the restart and continued to force Burnley backwards, but the visitors doubled their lead five minutes into the second half through Kian McMahon-Brown.
Murty’s side refused to let the occasion pass them by and continued to play on the front foot in search of a route back into the contest.
Substitute Tom Proctor made an immediate impact after his introduction, driving Sunderland forward before producing an assist for Felix Scott, who cut inside and calmly fired into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit with just over 15 minutes remaining.
That goal sparked a strong finish from the Lads, with Abdullahi forcing another excellent save, but the Clarets held on to claim victory.
