Two Southampton fans banned for doing Nazi salutes.

Two Southampton supporters have been handed three-year stadium bans for making hissing noises and Nazi-style salutes during a clash with Tottenham.

Thomas Flynn, 22, and Michael Haydon, 23, shouted anti-semitic insults at Spurs supporters during the December 19 clash at St Mary's Stadium, which the north London club won 2-0.

Tottenham were a popular club with Jewish immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the club retains strong Jewish links.

Southampton Magistrates' Court heard how Tottenham fans alleged a group of home supporters to have made racist and fascist gestures in their direction.

Prosecutor Charles Nightingale said one of the Spurs fans reported: "There was a white male raising his right hand and finger below his nose and making hissing sounds imitating gas escaping."

Haydon, who had been drinking since the morning of the match, was arrested inside the stadium and Flynn was detained outside, while another fan also reported to have made offensive gestures was never found.

Jane Hiatt, defending Haydon, said: "This is very out of character and a blip. He's horrified and ashamed."

She said her client admitted to making hissing sounds but denied making gestures.

Nicola Attwood, defending Flynn, said: "He is disgusted with himself."

Magistrate Victoria Parker handed the pair three-year bans and 12-week community orders, and also ordered them to pay £145 in costs.

Parker said: "This was a very serious matter and watching you during these court proceedings I think you know that and are very ashamed of what you did."

Glad these two idiots got banned. But still find it weird that the term yid etc that Spurs fans use isn't being stopped.

 

Posted this in Saints Stuff earlier, thought 3 years was quite light really, do you know if the club will be handing our their own punishment?

 

I know Mike from school, never struck me as a racist but he's very easily led and impressionable, and has a complete lack of self control while drinking/sniffing.

Not making excuses for him as he's a massive **** but, yeah it doesn't surprise me to see him involved in something like this.

 

Sadly letting the good reputation of Saints fans down. At least they are banned now but you'd wonder what they would would be doing outside of football stadiums

 

My cousin got a further ban. He is banned for 20yrs or something like that.

Stupid. Thoughtless. But young and they'll hopefully learn.

 

I think 3 years is fair. They were idiotic and did a really stupid thing in the heat of the moment. But a 10, 20 year ban would be harsh, especially if it was a first offence. I'm not condoning what they did, but should have a second chance.

I would hope the pair of them write a letter to Tottenham club apologising for their stupid behaviour. And also one to Southampton for the same reason.

 

Why are Tottenham closely associated with having a Jewish support? Arsenal have many more according to their own fans and both clubs have a fabulous diversity of people following them.

 

Tottenham is just up the road from Stamford Hill, one of the largest Hasidic communities in Europe.
