Two nil and we f***ed it up. Cannot believe we lost. Nelson cock up for second goal. Free header for their winner in stoppage time. Gutted
Yep, wasn't a bundle of fun. Haven't seen the TV footage of their second goal yet, but the ball definitely moved on it's way towards Nelson - strong shot on a gusty night playing with the wind. Not being a Nelson apologist, just saying there might be mitigating circumstances. Biggest change was Wigan bringing on McCann, and with Morris going off at half time we seemed to lose shape and therefore a degree of control in midfield, which we were never really in in charge of in the first place, which left the defence exposed too often, and Wigan took advantage. Small changes, big consequences.
The frustration is multiplied when one looks back over a few lost opportunities which will probably bounce back and bite us in the rear: 2-0 up against Wigan and losing in added time.....2-0 up against Walsall and losing in added time.......leading against Shrewsbury and letting in an equaliser at the death....the same against Peterborough and a missed penalty against Colchester.....a potential 11 pts. The genuine losses are easier to take, even the 3-0 and 4-0 recently as these were largely beyond our control. The inability to close out and control games is very frustrating......"snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" is not a habit we should be getting into. These were points in the bag and the pressure would have been on the following teams regardless of whether they had games in hand. I hope that this frailty is very soon sorted out.
Really annoying - we had the points in our hands. 3 ridiculous goals: - First one: Give the ball away (at which point I thought this will be so annoying if they score from this), and then there's no way they should score from the hopeful lofted cross - 2nd: Goalkeeping howler, obviously - 3rd: Dreadful marking - no excuse for that at any point in the match, let alone the 96th minute. Thought it was a mistake taking Wright off in the closing stages - he's the sort of player we needed on the pitch to shut up shop and go home with a point. On the upside, generally a very good performance, defending aside. Excellent first 60 minutes.
Not sure if morris was injured but loft made goal. Dont no why wright went off again. Edinburgh does not seem to play him 90 mins anymore even though he was playing well. Could not see Gills not winning after terrific start to second half. Big big mistake by Nelson at the wrong time.
Yes, disappointing to lose after being 2-0 up but that was a slightly fortunate scoreline and the longer the game went on the more Wigan dominated. The real surprise was Nelson's obvious error with the second goal and the team would have looked to him to make sure everyone was marked for the final goal. But Nelson has sufficient brownie points to avoid condemnation. More important than match details, is the strategic position of the team. We seem unable to beat the top teams even with all the players turning in decent performances. Much of this failure is down to inexperience. The team will be excellent in a couple of years if the nucleus of players can be kept together. A bit of patience is called for at the moment and it would be great to secure promotion but only when they are ready.
In two months let alone two years the nucleus of this team could be taken from us. It really is a now or never with this team otherwise it will be another period of re building. In the ideal world where money does not talk we could hold onto our gems.......sadly this is not the case.
We cannot keep hold of the better players if we don t go up. Young good players will always leave if the price is right
Just seen TV recording and unfortunately have to withdraw my offer of mitigating circumstances against Nelson for the second goal. If he couldn't catch it it was perfect for sending over the bar.
Gio.......so we need to keep the 'family silver' intact if we are to have any chance of stepping up a level at the end of the season.
It was disappointing to lose after being 2-0 up especially with the Wigan winner being so late in the game. I thought a draw would have been a fair result as Wigan had some very good chances in the first half from which they should have scored at least one goal. We played some really good football at times, scored two good goals and were very unlucky with Dack`s fantastic free kick that hit the post, Wigan`s first goal where I thought there was a clear foul on Garmston and of course Nelson`s bad error which would only happen once every 3 seasons. What was staggering was to learn Wigan are still getting parachute payments from their time in the premiership so how they are in our league I have no idea. Also to hear we are in the lowest 5 budgets in division one shows what a fantastic season we are having and what a great job JE, the staff and players are doing. We are light years ahead of where we were this time just over a year ago before JE came in and the rest of the season should be very exciting. Cmon U Gills!
A very positive post and very refreshing after some of the comments i saw on twitter last night and much i agree with. BOTH sides had good chances in the first half, it could have gone either way but we were coming out on top in the first 60 mins. But we are Gills and we all knew in truth what the final outcome would be, much as the title suggests, but of course i don't condone the title....bad boy gio
First time I've never had my inbox with complaints, so I guess most supporters agree we fluffed it up Despite the stick the Gills players got though, I felt there was not enough credit given the opposite way to Wigan, at times I felt we were very 'lucky' in the first half, and yes people may highlight Nelson's misfortune but in the first half he put his body in the way of what looked liked a dead cert goal for the home side. Overall in the early stages of the game, I felt both sides were playing a league above, and supporters need to remember it only gets tougher from here on in. So take the beer goggles off and get behind the team and stop moaning when the opposition turn us over. We are second!...maybe not for long but even so a playoff place still beckons. If we miss out, we miss out but at least we gave it a good go in the first half of the season...have we actually been outside of the top four? (not sure) - so my message to supporters is get real, some of the stick the lads were getting on twitter was bordering on damn right disgusting. You know me, say it as it is but extreme personal attacks are a no, no just because we are losing.
brb I could have guessed differently regarding the thread title !..............anyway --- and that is one of the reasons why I don't do twitter or facebook -( General Chat is bad enough ) - There are too many infantile comments and complaints without any thought process. Gills are doing well for a small club with few resources , especially when you consider that over the last three seasons, 9 clubs in L1 have come down from the Championship, - thus are used to football of a 'higher' standard. Then there are clubs like Wigan who are still getting parachute payments, coupled with the 'bigger' clubs and their money, it was no surprise that Sky told everyone that we're nearly in the L1 financial 'relegation' places. I'd like Gills to be ambitious. I am sure that Mr.Scally would love to get us in the Premiership. Realistically that isn't going to happen unless we get major financial backing. Until (if) that happens we will remain a 'humble' team in the 3rd or 4th tier of the Football League. The overall ability and performance of our players will reflect that position within the football pyramid. Occasionally our players will be brilliant for individual matches - or over periods of a season. Other times they won't be so good in the contrary position. Occasionally we will have players, such as Matt Jarvis and Dack who are far better than most in L1. These 'ONE' players, in a side, cannot make the TEAM world beaters on their own, and quite rightly they move to 'better' clubs to improve their careers. Other times we have players, such as the McCammons of this world - who contribute to the overall lower standards of football at our club over a period of time governed by their length of contract - but individually, no ONE player can be blamed for our teams' performances over a whole season ------ Nelson, for example, has been outstanding - and not just recently ! He does have, ( at times ), minor faults - but his own standard of ability is good enough for the Championship or higher (he might even be good enough for Liverpool!). Sometimes our fans forget who we are and where we are when it comes to the quality of footballers in L1 and L2 . These players come with 'warts and all.' I can accept our individual and collective mistakes in our play! I don't like to see these mistakes . But I can accept them because I am realistic in my expectations of our team's potential achievements in relation to our resources. ( That is not to say that I am not ambitious - just pragmatic about our 'real' limitations ). Having written the above, I will defend myself when I criticise a player when he [Loft] gets sent off when they should have known better - but I cannot be critical of an otherwise wonderful player who has let the ball slip through his fingers. Our fans do have the right to be critical of mistakes - that is human nature. The only time I would consider joining the Twitter morons is if my team do not try their best - if a player ambles back ( instead of busting his gut ), when the opposition is charging at our goal etc. The players, need to at least put in their best effort. If it isn't good enough and we lose - so what - that is life - and I'll be back at the next game. I was gutted for Nelson and the team when the ball slipped through his fingers ( as I'm sure were Liverpool last night ) - but Nelson, and the whole team have tried their best in just about all the games this season - and sometimes it wasn't better than the opposition. I expect us to fail to win more often this season - because of the 'technical' reasons about meeting 'bigger' teams in our remaining fixtures, and because we will make further individual and collective mistakes in games - although I'd love to see an extension of our 'over achievement.' I don't expect, nor hope to see us lose because we don't try in any of those games. ONLY then can anyone have any justification for using six letter words that start with F and end in D.
I agree that personal attacks unless the circumstances that you, always, have outlined prevail are totally out of order. Yet we are human beings and disappointment is always hard to take when a winning position is turned on its head at the end of or even beyond the 'end of the game'. I am sure that I was one of many at the Man City play off final and it was a hard journey home with an 8 yr old son and his friend trying to explain that life is like that. However...the overall thread, to me, outlines the passion that is felt for the club and the desire for success and this must not be curtailed.....perhaps the channelling of the disappointment should be better directed....that is all. I watched the game on live stream here in SW France and my response at the end of the game was close to Anglo Saxon through disbelief, anger and disappointment....but there were no thoughts of malice or otherwise towards any player whatsoever.
