Getting old and confused, for which apologies. Could someone please remind me exactly why we signed/what we 'saw' in Butterfield and Becchio. God knows, I've tried, but it makes no sense to me
That's two of us then Becchio has got to be the most bizarre signing the club has made in the 37 years I have been supporting them.
When Hughton is only playing one striker (Holt) and Kamara is his second choice on the bench then I guess Becchio won't get on. Lord knows why Hughton won't give him a chance though, Holt and Kamara get given plenty of chances and have been modestly effective at best.
Butterfield was described as the 'next Paul Gascoigne', is the most naturally two footed player in England since Gascoigne, and was captain of Barnsley aged 21 having played 89 games for them. Becchio scored 87 goals in 221 appearances for Leeds, and 22 of those were this season.
was becchio an afterthought when it became apparent that Hooper wasn't coming? still doesn't explain why he's not playing though.
Any transfer is a risk of course. Players form might be affected by more than what goes on on the field of play. That is apparently why Vaughan was loaned out. But it does make you wonder what the Becchio signing was all about. Holt is quite clearly not performing to his best, maybe his best is gone. Kamara does look a wee bit lost at this level but it is probably hard for him to assert his authority with Holt in the side. With CH repeatedly bemoaning the missed chances, I would have thought he would have given Becchio more than one game to prove if he has it at this level. Butterfield we were told, even by posters on here who had never seen him play, was the equivalent of a new Gazza and definitely one to ease into the side. So two defensive central midfielders as the style meant there wasn't going to be a place for him. CH quickly realised he had to do something after the disastrous start, but since the disastrous conclusion since Christmas he hasn't changed a thing. Remarkable.
I have said before and will say again, whotun is a tactically unaware manager, always has been always will be.
100% agree! His rationality needs seriously examining...he plays a striker who has scored 4 PL goals ALL season instead of a 20-Championship-goal-by-January striker. Mindboggling! If we continue to play 1 up front next season, I will go mental. Pair RvW with Becchio and they'll form a good partnership. After all it has been ages since we have had two good strikers at this club!
Don't you surely mean..."Could someone please remind me exactly why we signed/what we 'saw' in Hughton and his coaching staff?"
Surely a recent crazy signing was the EIGHT year deal that was given to Pardew. I can only assume there is a get out clause on that one.
