The Olympics is a load of bollocks anyways, it's basically a combination of all the sports no one likes. Who in there right mind would want to watch Archery, Rowing, weight lifting, Judo or the worst one of the lot Table Tennis. Sports no one gives a toss about, yet when the Olympics are on everyone is glued to it.

To proper sports that people actually like, the Olympics is a Micky mouse event, like football, Boxing and Tennis. You really think young aspiring footballers dream of scoring the winner in the Olympic Gold medal match? :biggrin:
 
Maybe you should drag a chair out of your house Shergy, place it up against the fence, then have a good look around. There is a big wonderful world out there, full of people with differing views on just about everything. Believe it or not, people actually do watch the stuff you dislike. I hope you're not too shocked. <laugh>
 
i did see somewhere that there can't be any major sporting events around London for the duration of the games, and also know that Ascot has a change to its schedule next season. I can only assume that the King George meeting will be moved maybe a week earlier so it doesnt clash with the games?
 
There are actually very few &#8216;sports&#8217; in the old Olympics in my opinion. More games and pastimes. The fact that the whole thing is called the &#8216;Olympic Games&#8217; rather than the &#8216;Olympic Sports&#8217; is rather a clue on that front. I&#8217;ve never myself been a big fan and think that the likes of running and bike riding (I&#8217;ve always refused to call it cycling) aren&#8217;t really sports but merely pastimes to get you fit for proper sports.

Has anyone seen the timetable incidentally re that torch carrying malarkey??? It lasts 70 days but on only 1 day does the shiny beacon come to Wiltshire and even more amazing only 2 days are spent in God&#8217;s own county, Devon. What dappy individual planned that route?!?
 
When you think about it Barn, running would have to be the purest sport. As soon as they climbed down from the trees, they'd be racing each other across the savannah. Before long a some big mouthed grunter would boast that he could beat the others to the river and back. Some other bloke would grunt that he had a bit of warthog bowel to bet on the outcome. Before they knew it, sport had been invented.
 
Steveo.....I'm not sure how they can enforce that rule, if I was in charge of an annual sporting event in London, and Boris Johnson told me I couldn't hold it, id tell him where to go, and there is nothing he could do.

Not sure why Ascot would shuffle there fixtures around, surely there will be plenty of other racing clashing with the Olympics, maybe it has Something to do with the fact the BBC won't show the meeting, as they will be to busy showing the Olympics :biggrin:
 
I quite like the old track and field - some lovely "camels mouths" to be seen <ok>

The best sports are pub sports - darts, snooker, dominoes and shove ha'penny
 
King Shergar,

one of the conditions of the Olympic Games next year is that the govermnent has to ensure that no other big sporting event takes place in and around London during the duration of the games.
already I know that they have changed the start of the Premier League football season and the Community Shield won't take place at Wembley next year for example.
 
Blimey Steveo i hadn't heard of that - seems excessive really. I knew they were moving the charity Shield but that was also because the olympic final takes place on the same day. It's a nonsense really though. The people going to Ascot would be moving in a totally different direction so wouldnlt add to congestion - the games are salso sold out so it's not like the king George would be in competition against them!
 
Oddy....I'd agree Pub games/sports whatever you want to call them are the best ones. Not sure about Dominoes but definitely Snooker, Pool and Darts. The funny thing is with those sports the more you drink the better you get, get me on a pool table after 8 pints, and it's like watching Jimmy White in action, yet im ****e when sober.

Steveo....Fair enough, but if I owned a sporting venue and I wanted to have a sporting event there during the Olympics, I realy don't see what the government could do about it. What about racecourses around London, like Windsor, are they still going to have there Monday night meeting every week during the Olympics :biggrin:
 
OddDog - you'd have loved Indoor League. It was on ITV in the early seventies, at lunchtimes. Fred Trueman introduced it and they had darts, bar billiards, arm wrestling, skittles, shove halfpenny. Great stuff. The arm wrestling was particularly nailbiting, as I recall.

My grandad was an ace exponent of shove halfpenny in our village and my mum has recently acquired a board. It is a terrific and very skilful game.
 
My dad used to have a shove halfpenny board. What do they "shove" these days?

Typical old English pub, shove halfpenny, dominos and cribbage plus a dart board. Then along cam bar billiards followed by pool. Prefer pool myself.
