I see Poundstretcher are sponsoring the card at Warwick - should we expect quantity rather than quality? In the bumper they've really gone for the Skelton runner Keops Des Bordes and he is as short as 4/6 in places having opened around EVS. He won his only point from a horse called Fortune De Mer who also then joined the Skeltons and won a listed bumper at Cheltenham. But this is far from a one horse race and Paul Nicholls' runner No Drama This End also won his sole point by a country mile. He is a full brother to El Muchacho and is respected for connections who have a 27% strike rate in bumpers over the last 5 seasons. Of those to have had a run under rules, Big Bert and Cinquenta make most appeal. Big Bert was a close 2nd in a Carlisle bumper containing a couple of expensive purchases from powerful yards whilst Cinquenta was well beaten in 3rd in a Chepstow bumper but the winner of that heat looks above average having won again under a penalty. There has been some e/w support for both Bamber and The Hawkstonian but I will go with a speculative e/w dabble on Cinquenta who was tenderly ridden when beaten at Chepstow in a decent looking race and once again has the excellent Gavin Sheehan in the plate.
Hello, crew. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and can I take this opportunity to wish everyone, and I do mean everyone, a Happy New Year. Down to the old brass tacks now and with an eye to the future who was the standout Christmas time performer for you??? Honourable mentions to Constitution Hill, Sir Gino, The Big Westener, Il Est Francais, the breeding shed bound Nietzsche Has, The New Lion, Galopin Des Champs and Brighterdaysahead but I'd give that accolade to JUBILEE EXPRESS. His fast finishing 2nd in the Welsh Grand National had, in my opinion, the wow factor about it on just his 5th run over fences. Jumped, travelled and quickened - just what you need from your modern day staying chaser. He also seems to possess Stamina with a capital 'S'. Raised 4 lbs by the handicapper (to 130), this morn, to me he is going to be some staying handicap chaser to follow moving forward. But, unless the 7YO son of No Risk At All completely routs a competative field next time out (and gets a huge impost boost in the process) then he, obviously, isn't going to get into the '25 GN but Jubilee Express would certainly be my idea of the 2026 Grand National victor. You can currently get 66/1 about him and '25 but if you can get your preferred bookie chappie to quote you similar odds re the 2026 edition then my advice would be take it, team. Now at this point I'm sure the stat or trends followers, on the forum, are shaking their heads and yelling, 'No, no, no, no, no, no, no, Dr Sir Barn, my old love' as a Welsh trained animal hasn't won Aintree's big 'un since 1905. Incidentally, Wiltshire also has a terrible record in that race. Namely nothing since 1937 - although cor blimey the winner that year, ho, ho, ho certainly delivered (go on look up the 1937 winner's name...I dare you!!!). I think Jubilee Express has the capability to be a real trendsbuster and the 11th richest man in Wales triumphing in a Grand National would be a joy to behold. Not at Sam Waley-Cohen levels perhaps but still a joy, I say joy.
You’ve mixed up your bargain stores Oddy. It’s Poundland. Same ****e different logo though very little sold for a pound in their stores these days. I suspect somebody must have got well stung on Betfair in the last race at Uttoxeter with Sean Bowen getting his mount up from miles away. Evan William’s The Cypriot the one for the notebook though. The front runner had nil assistance from the claimer in the saddle when push came to shove. One to look out for when ol boy Wedgey next on board. Hauraki Gulf ew in the next at Warwick @ 11/1. Not a great horse but a trier.
15:45 Punchestown - The Queen Of Zim e/w EBF Mares Flat Race over an extended 2m2f on soft ground. Rules debut for this well-bred Getaway mare (actually, the 4YO still a filly, I guess?). Trainer has two entries in this race, both with chances. Mr. J. H. Williamson (7) on board for the Gordon Elliott yard. 7/1 best price early-doors, in most places on the ATR site.
E/W thievery I don't think I've ever been to a Poundland (or Poundstretcher for that matter). In Germany we have Rudi's Rampe which is in a similar vein
Three year old filly Saint Lucie makes an impressive winning hurdles debut for Mullins / Townend / Ricci at Punchestown and is as low as 10/1 in some books for the Triumph Hurdle (16/1 still widely available). She probably hasn't beaten much today but was certainly visually impressive. A slightly better day for WP Mullins with 7 runners at Punchestown yielding 2 wins, 3 seconds and 3 third places but I guess they will be disappointed that both High Class Hero and Saint Sam were beaten.
