    4.55 Ripon Alnashama 3/1

Charlie boy has turned a corner and is firing in winners after such a long time in the doldrums without one. The debut run will have brought it on and even though the seasonal debut would be disappointing given he went off 11/10, the form of the yard at the time meant there was next to no chance of him winning that day. Put a line through it. 2 year old form looks strong enough to be very competitive today and with a false fav taking up a large chunk of the market, 3/1 looks like a cracking bet.

Not inside inside but I've been told it's one of their better ones and will be more than good enough to account for the Stoute horse!!!

Morning, team. Awful racing today so I’ll be steering well clear. Although as they say around my way, ‘the 5/1 winner of a bad race pays the same as the 5/1 winner of the Derby’.

How badly has the ‘Coronation Street Cup’ cut up at Epsom on Saturday though, people?!? Cor blimey. Just 7 runners and only 4 from this Isle! And those 4 are hardly the best 4 12 furlong horses in training. If the 2 French animals and Mr O’Brien’s Tapestry all turn up that may just about save the race but a woeful entry from UK based handlers with £370,000 up for grabs.

    R.I.P. – Charles Kennedy

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said: “Charles’s untimely death robs Britain of one of the most gifted politicians of his generation”

I did not agree with much of his politics but he was a likeable, engaging politician in an era where ‘career politicians’ are scorned. Andrew Neil coined the phrase “Chatshow Charlie” but I think that his epitaph will be that he was the Party Leader who stood against the Iraq War – about which he was proven right but stayed silent. He lost his seat to the SNP in May after more than thirty years during which he led the Liberal Democrats to hold 62 seats in the Commons in 2005. Sadly, I think that we are subsequently going to discover that he lost his long-running battle with the bottle.

Ripon 3:25 – all the money has piled on Memory Cloth because the rain has softened the ground, but HYDRANT was beaten (literally) in an apprentice’s race (jockey got two day whip ban) on Friday but can return to the previous winning trend if he can win off a career-high mark at the age of nine.

Ripon 3:55 – always a good idea to follow horses that are on a winning run for an in-form yard and favourite BIRDMAN fits the bill.

I wish I had known just how soft it was at Ripon before making my selections!

In the 3:25, Hydrant just got stuck in the mud and was out on his feet after halfway. It may be that the new handicap mark is more than he can win off at nine, so he has won all the races that he will win this year.

In the 3:55, Sam James gave Birdman far too much to do and the other horse with good recent form that handled the ground, Instant Attraction, was long gone before he got into the race; and he could not even overhaul the other market leader Indy for second.

Time to put the wallet away until the ground dries up. Betting when it is soft on the flat is the fast track to the poor house...

Van Wilder has drifted from 5/2 out to 9/2, worth a punt at those odds I'd have thought.
