They've still got those ****ing horrible "100,000 Tattersalls blah blah blah" races though This one on Wednesday - a 3YO only 6F sprint in the middle of April. 5 runners rated 71,74, 88, 109 and 111. Who the **** needs it? 54 grand to the winner as well, that's as much as some of the grade 1s at Aintree last week.
Ya and the top rated horse had four and half lengths on the second last time they met. At least I could have a bet without the favourite with the shorties at Aintree. Pointless
These are the weeks us jumps boys dread Oddy. Must say Punchy festivel has a quality look about it especially with Cue Card & ThistleCrack coming over.Hope to buy Mr Tizzard a beer to thank him if I bump into him
I cannot remember the last time that we went the whole winter with no Aidan O’Brien runner in the first five of The Derby betting. Perhaps that is why it was 12/1 the field. It was never going to last and now the market is headed by 4/1 US Army Ranger, victor of an ordinary maiden a week ago. Two Ballydoyle horses that were featured in The Derby betting were well beaten in the Ballysax on Sunday, so 4/1 looks very short given the number of O’Brien hot-pots beaten recently. The Craven meeting signals the start of the British Flat Season proper and hopefully the weather will not leave Newmarket with soft or heavy ground like that plaguing other courses. Time to blow the dust off the old notebook as there are usually several pretty informative maiden races at Newmarket and Newbury, never mind the Classic trials, starting with some pretty well bred fillies in the opener including Golden Reign. Last season, the Feilden Stakes saw the seasonal bow of the subsequent Derby winner and I had been hoping that Midterm (Midday’s Galileo son) would be starting on the same road; however, this year’s renewal features just four with Sir Michael Stoute’s charge defecting at the declaration stage. Our first opportunity to see some of the fillies that might contest the 1000 Guineas comes with a good field going to post for the Nell Gwyn Stakes, with the betting dominated by three leading contenders in the ante post market. Nathra chased home Minding in the Fillies’ Mile, with Coolmore back in sixth. First Victory won both her juvenile starts, including over course and distance in the Oh So Sharp Stakes. Illuminate has the burden of a penalty but her close second in the Cheveley Park still makes her interesting. If any of these are to threaten the front three in the Guineas betting, they will need to win authoritatively and I think FIRST VICTORY represents the best chance in that regard, if she and Only Mine do not cut each other’s throats up front.
Top man is Mr Tizaaaaaaaard, honest as the day is long and really deserves his success I love when they interview him about Cue Card or Thistlecrack, you can tell he is absolutely 100% devoted to them and loves them to bits, I always love listening to his west country drawl He is so UNpretentious
Interesting day for the small Helen Nelmes yard tomorrow. Two runners at Exeter, The Clyda Rover in the 3.00 who won the same race two years ago off a higher mark but has only managed three runs since being pulled up each time. He has been off the track for some time now and I am not prepared to gamble on his wellbeing, he is an interesting runner though. The other entry on the card is KALMBEFORETHESTORM 25/1 in the 2.25 who looks very well treated off 108. He has yet to win a handicap but has been a decent third from higher. Only modest but is ultra consistent and goes really well for tomorrow pilot Paul Moloney. At 25/1 he looks a tasty each way bet.
LUCKY BEGGAR 8/1 Newmarket 3.20 A winner last spring off 102 and races here off 91. That was over the minimum but is a course and distance winner. A recent spin on the all weather should have put him straight for this and he looks worth a punt.
3:45 Spring Bird A 5 furlong sprint that doesn't have that much "proper" pace in it, and that's why I like corse and distance winner Spring Bird. She was able to do Cadeaux Pearl for toe on her only trip to this track, and nothing in this field has the boot of that one. She was poor on stable debut but forget that run and she is a big price today for a yard who have had recently been in good form.
Its what Stick does, he's Templegate, Pricewise, Linfoot all rolled into one, he knows how to start a gamble does this fella!
Newmarket signals the start of the flat in earnest, then. Couple taking my interest, together with the shout from Stick @Exeter. Abi Scarlet, 3.10 Southwell Swiss Range, 2.10. Newmarket - though Golden Reign also appeals Good Luck
Morning, you types. Hope everyone well. To my eye this time of the term is always the most dangerous for the old punting punters as in the NH sphere you have so many animals who have had enough and are ‘over the top’ whilst on the Flat a huge number of horses will be running solely to give them an education, as a ‘prep’ or when they are blatantly unfit. In so many cases, at this point in the campaign, it is Guesswork with a capital ‘G’, pilgrims. I’ve deployed the ‘No bet’ banner as a result but will deffo be watching today’s action together with the faithful notebook. Good luck, me old loves.
Yes lots of Guesswork at this time of the year. I like the look of Archimento in the 7f Newmarket maiden at 1705. Dunlop has started well and Archipenkos tend to like a bit of give. The stand out pedigree in the race is Varian's Azizaan by Dubawi out of a full-sister to Giant's Causeway. Keep an eye out for him.
Rather contradicting my above post somewhat by saying this (but not that much as Mr Henderson always plays with a straight bat, always has them ‘ready’ and the word ‘dishonest’ is not in his vocabulary) but ARGOCAT is a very intriguing entry at Newbury on Friday afternoon. Hasn’t run on the level for almost 5, I say 5 years, but Mr Henderson seems to have decided on this avenue for the horse – probably because he does look very, very, very harshly treated in the NH sphere and ultimately would be somewhat uncompetitive (as high as 156 over the big ‘uns). Off 75 on Friday and racing on the level he looks most interesting though, methinks. Ems’ ex has already been booked.
It's been raining in Newmarket pretty much constantly for about 2 hours now, added to last night's rain and the going will be testing to say the last up at the Rowley Mile. She's already been flagged up, but without a doubt GOLDEN REIGN get's today's Blueblood of the Day sticker, being a half-sister to Golden Horn.
