OK from another thread we're being told that all cars are evil polluting representations of a perceived masculinity. Is it OK for us then to have unhealthy desires and cravings for transportation driven by internal combustion engines and is it OK for Troy to drive my favorite car to take his son to school? Should those opposing car use start shouting abuse at our football icons and barricading their cars in the players car park?

It's probably too late to educate Troy on this but his son should be walking to school (depending obviously on age and distance). Driving produces proportionately more emissions over short distances and so this is a good place to start - because a boy who is always driven to school will think it is normal.

More to the point, children need to get more exercise. There is a direct correlation between obesity levels and a lack of physical activity undertaken.
Of course, someone in Troy's position has to be more aware of nutters, so he has to consider the safety aspect.

I hope he wins the dads' race at sports day - he'll never live it down if he doesn't

I used to drive 200 metres to school in the sixth form. It meant I could get to the pub quicker at lunch times!!!! I agree though that kids need to exercise and a good start is walking or cycling to school when its safe to do so. With our kids they were always in the pool at 6am for a couple of hours or about 5 to 7000 metres swimming, at times in the training regime they would jog or cycle (the pool was next to school) but most of the year the only practical way was to drive. Given this the catchment of schools here I think most kids get driven in. Anyway there is no chance of my children becoming obese due to their upbringing their metabolisms are massively quick and they burn everything the girls are and will remain size 6 to 8 UK and the son has a BMI around 12 still having been around 6 to 8 when swimming competitively. The better the car though the more kids enjoy being driven and then driving to school and if you've sent £150000 on a car you'd better get the miles in.....
