Sorry if our younger members find nothing of interest in this subject, But some of our older members may well be interested, and could well revive memories of when some of our favourite players were playing.
My oldest Swans’ programme is Forest away in May 1947, then Bournemouth away in August 1947. Next are Aug. 1948 Swansea v Watford Sep. 1948 Swansea v Crystal Palace Oct. 1948 Swansea v Exeter Aug. 1949 Cardiff v Swansea Sep. 1949 Swansea v Sheffield United May 1951 Swansea v Eindhoven Aug. 1951 Swansea v Notts County Sep. 1951 West Ham v Swansea Oct. 1951 Birmingham v Swansea I have many from the 1970s onwards Phillip Holden was the Chairman when I started going in 1966. Got to know Malcolm Struel very well when he was involved with Neath RFC in the 1990s
When clubs use to play mostly local lads was the best time for me in Football & Rugby, It was the true sense of being a supporter of your own home club. Today we support in name only with very little home grown players, Big clubs like the Arsenal, both manchester, liverpool, chelsea and others you dont get the sense of belonging to your home club.but foreigners playing for your club....
I can beat all of you! I have a Accrington v. Swansea City programme from the 1888-1889 season. Paid £500 for it. Very rare apparently.
Now that would be rare - especially as Swansea Town wasn’t formed until 1912 and didn’t play as Swansea City until 1969.....
Taffvalerowdy, you seem to have a great collection there, hang on to them, could be vert valuable one day. Price on this Swans v Blackburn Nov. 1953 was 2 old pence, and there were 240 of the old pence in a pound. Day you are correct, most then were local boys, ..... pen pictures on this 1954 - 55 handbook were. ........... Ivor Allchurch born. Swansea. Len Allchurch. Born. Swansea Melvyn. That's pretty much the Leeds team we almost performed a giant killing act on in the FA cup 3rd round Jan 1970. Just a dodgy sending off of Mel Nurse spoilt it. Not that I am bitter having watched it as a 15 year old
I’ve met Mike England a couple of times. Lovely unassuming guy - only negative, he played for the Blueturds. He told me he couldn’t believe the hatred between both sets of supporters!
I have found that the ‘old school’ players tend to be gentlemen and more grounded than the prima donnas of today
