Down’s passing is almost symbolic, given that beautifully crafted prose such as his is becoming a thing of the past. For all the benefits of digitalisation, it has surely shifted our appetites from the rich banquets that writers such as Alastair Down could treat us to, to the junk food of social media and 5 second video clips. Note to self: read more in-depth articles from reputable sources.

RIP to a great writer and entertainer <rose>

I was genuinely quite shocked by the news of Alastair Down’s passing. Only last week I was watching an interview he’d given relating to the cheltenham press room being named in his honour. I haven’t been to the festival for a number of years now but I felt he made an excellent case for me to reconsider. He also recounted some great stories. One in particular where he had an AP voucher for a good thing that fell in the parade ring when the crowd responded to the Queen Mother entering. He said it almost made him a republican <laugh>. A brilliant writer and an outstanding presenter on Channel 4 Racing. RIP.
