A tribute thread to one of my all time Ipswich heroes who played in the great Ipswich teams of the 1970s. I remember some of his sublime goals and he was one of the best headers of the football in the league. He formed a great partnership with David Jonty Johnson in the mid 70s. Please feel free to post some of your memories of the great man. After that he had Football League spells with Grimsby Town, Southend United, Peterborough United and Colchester United.[1] Whymark played a single game for England, against Luxembourg in 1977.[2] In 1999/2000 he became coach of Norwich City's under-13 side, and he then returned to Ipswich Town to perform a similar role with their under 12's.[5] Honours Ipswich Town Texaco Cup Winner: 1973 Charity Shield Runner up: 1978 FA Cup Winner: 1978 (did not play) Vancouver Whitecaps NASL Winner 1979
You make a good point Welly because back in the early 70s Bobby stole a few decent players up in that there Norfolk right from under the Budgies noses! Clive Woods was another player who was born in Norwich! Yes and I do know that Ruel Fox and Louis Donowa both came from Whitton!
Jason Dozzell was a Chantry lad, same year at Chantry High School as my brother...you'd never get a Chantry lad playing for the Budgies!
Whymark is often overlooked. Possibly because he didn't feature in any major finals. Anyone find footage of that Lazio game?
This one?
I thought to start with he'd died (he hasn't has he?) Anyway ,great player for Town- best known as one of the best attacking headers of the ball but so much more to his game and you always knew he'd give 100%[unlike some of the clueless dollops we've had to put up with in recent years(No names no pack drill !)]
Big al, I was the same as you, thought he had died. However,am afraid to say I was at the Lazio game... He was pure class in the air. Always looked like he could do with a good meal! But he was aways class on the field during those years in the 70s.
No he hasn't died! He is just one of the unsung heroes who I used to watch when I was a nipper and he is one of those players that epitomised the Bobby Robson years for me. He cost us nothing yet gave us everything!
Oh the days of wanting to play football because you loved it, not because you made shed loads of cash.
That WBA game was my first ITFC match. Born in West Brom but moved to Clare in '74. My dad took me to see the Albion, Trev did his thing, Mariner made his home debut and I was a blue forever! Shame he didn't get the FA Cup experience, but he was always my favourite of that era. I also like=d his funny 'fists clenched' goal celebration, too!
Sivel, Burley, Hunter, Beattie, Mills, Osborne, Talbot, Warky, Woods, Mariner, Whymark 8 Of the players who played for Town that day all came from our youth academy! It is amazing to think that in the 13 years that Bobby was manager he only signed 14 players and made a big profit on signings throughout that period. The biggest money signing was Paul Mariner who cost £450,000! Arnold Muhren and Frans Thjssen came for a combined fee of £250,000! Absolutely amazing.
Robson sold Brian Talbot to Arsenal for £450,000 and used part of the money for Muhren and Thijssen.Probably the best deal in the history of the club.
One of the best bits of business he did when he became manager was to bring in Rod Belfitt and Frank Clarke who basically saved us from relegation I think 1970/71? In 1971 he then went out and bought Big Al from Blackburn for £70,000 and shipped out Billy Baxter and Derek Chopper Jefferson. The other player I used to love to watch play was Colin Viljoen he was such a classy and skillfull player in Midfield. We are talking now about our lack of creativity from Midfield and if we had a player only half as good as Colin we would be fine! A superb player and heaven knows how much he would be worth in todays transfer prices!
unfortunately i wasn't alive in those days but i've got a question for those who were... how good was eric gates? seen a bit of footage of him and heard a few things about him but he only got 2 england caps, was he better than that? my fave has to be john wark. he is a very good friend of my dad's and i remember growing up as little kid playing one on one with him in our garden, both in our town kit, good days indeed.
Eric Gates was another one of the great players that came from Bobby's youth system. A tricky attacking midfielder who scored spectacular goals!
