Samba won't come. Gibson isn't better than Barton.

    I would have thought:

    Kenny

Young - Alex - Onuoha - Bridge (sigh)

SWP - Barton - Faurlin - Taarabt(newbie hopefully due to ACN)

Macheda - HH (hopefully Pavy or AJ)

    Agree<ok>

If that CB is Alex and the LB being Bridge I'll think we'll be ok defensively.
As for the CF I hope for either Zamora, Pavluychenko or Jelavic. And if we can get Onouha we'll have competition for places in defence for a change!

agreed. Despite much of his free role play, I'd like to see play a more "advanced playmaker" role if you will from Taarabt

No space for Mackie? prefer Mackie in the hole with Adel on the left

    Kenny
    Young Onuoha Alex Traore
    SWP Barton Faurlin Taraabt
    Mackie
    AJ

During the African Nations revert to 4-4-2 with Bridge as left back, Mackie left wing, and AJ and Macheda up top.

Take them rose tinted specs off please Loopy.

    1. How you would take Mackie over Barton is beyond me, and

    2. Look at where we got Mackie from, elnino is right, he found his level there.

Whilst I agree that our defence needs shoring up, I can't help but continue thinking that what's wrong is actually more a combination of the attack force and the tactics. Let me explain: It seems to be Warnock's preferred tactic to be ostensibly defensive, with one up front (Helgusson) to get on the end of balls punted upfield in the hope that he can hold onto it long enough for the support to catch up. And because SWP, Barton and Taarabt are all 'off their game' there is is insufficient creativity to provide the telling defensive-splitting pass. Aside from Helgusson, we have seen that Betty and DJ are not providing answers; Betty 'cos he ain't good enough and DJ through a combination of injury and this poor service.

So with all this going on, the opposition - which, remember, is consistently of better quality than faced last season - can afford to play further up the field, fairly safe in the knowledge that our greatest threat comes from set pieces, which are also generally poorly executed at the moment. Sure, there may be other in-play goal threats, but better quality opposition can cope with it. Losing the odd goal here and there is collateral damage when you're allowed to play further upfield, enjoy most of the possession and can put our defence under sustained periods of pressure - it's bound to crack more regularly.

So I say by all means shore up the central defence but, Mr Warnock, please bring in 2-3 more forwards/attacking midfielders that get us fans excited when they've got the ball and the opposition alarmed. Play further upfield and correct the imbalance that we're seeing, where teams enjoy territorial advantage camped in the final third and take some of the pressure off our defence. It's no wonder we're questioning their competency but, **** me, they're having to deal with an awful lot. Maybe its the attack that ain't doing its job?
