Sunderland look to have won the race to sign the Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, fighting off competition from North-east rivals Newcastle.

There was also interest in the 24-year-old from Watford and West Bromwich Albion, but Sunderland are believed to have offered better terms for the player.

Sam Allardyce is desperate to add new faces to a team who have won just three Premier League games this season. Sunderland, who face Liverpool tonight, have also lost their last four games, conceding 11 goals in the process.
Allardyce believes the pace of Townsend will add a new dimension to his side. Townsend, whose contract at Spurs is not due to end until 2018, will significantly increase his current £40,000-a-week salary by moving to the Stadium of Light.

The England international is increasingly frustrated over his lack of opportunities at White Hart Lane this season under Mauricio Pochettino. He was dropped and fined following a clash with the fitness coach Nathan Gardiner after Spurs’ 3-1 victory against Aston Villa last month.

That seems to have sealed his fate and Allardyce, given the authority to sign players to dig Sunderland out of their desperate situation, looks to have convinced the player to move to the North-east.

Not sure how I feel about this one.

Might freshen the squad up, he's very direct and has pace.

One thing for certain, if he does move to us he'll never play for England again!!

Don't want him to start with and if he is improving on his 40k per week wages, then it's a shocking signing.

We have Borini and Johnson for where he plays, it doesn't make sense if this is true...

I get the impression he likes to play AJ as a CM or in a free role, although that's probably out of necessity at the minute.

He is direct and has pace which is what we want and i do believe he is better than what we have in wide positions..
However..It is in defence where we are desperate for improvement..

A few sources reporting this now, it certainly looks like he's coming here.

Would you play him before Borini and Johnson? I'm not so sure...

Borini is scoring goals so should be picked. However, Johnson has not impressed so i would play Townsend ahead of him at this moment in time..

Well rumours are that Defoe could be released in January to free up wages, also Fletcher and Larsson are reportedly targets for other teams.

We may need a couple of strikers. Apart from that position, I would say 2 CB's, AM, LB and recall Pickford.

    I think he's ****e! Don't rate him! Ask @Typical_Juan

The transfer window, if I'm not wrong, opens on Friday so how can we have offered terms to a player under contract?

Spurs want rid so it'll have been given the green light already I'd imagine.

Pretty sure It is against premier league rules to discuss a contract with a player outside of the transfer window. I know Spurs want rid but I'm pretty sure terms can't be offered!

I'm guessing that it's only against the rules if the club selling haven't sanctioned it as it'd technically be tapping up.

Surely if they want rid of him they can start negotiations whenever they like as long as they've okay'd it.

Seems daft to me if we can't talk to him if that's the rules but I'm just guessing mate.

Yeah me too mate! I don't know for certain but I don't trust levy! I also don't rate Townsend! He's a 1 in 4 player and we already have enough of them! If he signs I'll support him fully though as with anyone.

According to the Times today he is being swapped with Baraheno (spelling) and going to WBA, so we can relax, but what do the media know.

I actually like Townsend and I think he'd be a very good edition to our squad as long as it's for a reasonable price.
I'd like to see us play this if it's true.

    ................Catts..Mvilla.........
    Andros..........................Lens/Watmore...
    ..................Borini..Fletcher........

That's a good team imo. With Seb,Defoe and Johnson pushing for places. We'd just need Pickford in goal and a couple of new CB's to finish us off.

    All about opinions mate...

the way i look at at....Andros no better than AJ.

Lens seems like a lazy twat and Watmore is just upcoming.

Defoe is far superior to Fletcher.

strange how we all look at things differently,
