Ipswich Town are to honour former boss Paul Jewell by naming the main Portman Road stand after him. The Suffolk club already has Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey stands, named after their most successful former managers, and now Sir Paul Jewell’s name will be given to the main stand when the East of England Co-op’s sponsorship ends. Jewell led Ipswich on a nail-biting run that almost saw them move through the divisions. Unfortunately, that would have been down a division, but nevertheless it made for a degree of nervous excitement. Paul Jewell after another thrilling Ipswich win Ipswich were also delighted that Jewell helped raise the club’s profile when he masterminded a close-fought 7-1 defeat at mighty Peterborough, in front of millions live on Sky Sports. Owner Mucus Evens knew he was on to a winner with Jewell when the former Derby boss was exposed by the News of the World for romping with a mystery blonde. Evens hoped that Jewell’s energy and enthusiasm would rub off on the team, and so it proved as they constantly played like they’d just got out of bed. Self-made millionaire Evens said in a statement from his Caribbean home: “I spend all my time in the town and around the club, and it soon became clear that there was a huge amount of affection for Paul Jewell, even after I sacked him because we were bottom of the league. “I therefore wanted to reflect that by naming our main stand after him. The Paul Jewell stand will be a lasting legacy for fans to enjoy for generations to come.” Suffolk Gazette can also exclusively reveal that Evens is considering renaming Sir Alf Ramsey Way, the road that leads away from the north of the stadium, to Roy Keane Way. It’s believed the road will be rough, difficult to manage and pointless, but Evens is said to be sure it will be popular with Ipswich fans.
