Thanks THFC: Hard to see why AVB is being so vilified. Given the injuries he's had to cope with he is off to an excellent start.
Second only to Harry,so why are people complaining?,were not halfway through the season yet,and nicely placed.
Luke are you Harry's brother? At every chance you rush to defend him. Why? You're not even a Spurs fan it's almost as bizarre as a Man U. fan spending all his time on the Spurs board. Who said Harry was not interested in defence anyway? He brought in Palacious, Kaboul, Parker which suggests he was well aware of the need for defence. Most of the criticism of Harry was not to do with his football it was to do with his constant commentary to the media.
Totally agree. I'm not in that camp at all, but we do have to remember that it's far too early to compare stats on AVB to Redknapp. Redknapp's record was over far more games and he retained a very good percentage where there were far more opportunities for that percentage to decrease. numbers game an'all that. based on AVB's stats so far, i'd like to see him working on a way for us to improve on the defeat %. 4/11 is quite a lot already, to be honest in games we shouldn't have been beaten. if hypothetically we compare that as a % to Redknapp's 144 games, AVB would be looking at 52 defeats or so, if the averages continued. 16 more defeats than Redknapp. At this stage the %'s can be turned very quickly. So, anyone giving him too much stick for anything other than persisting with a couple of players, or, the odd substitutions he's made etc, should keep quiet! It's a great job considering the problems we've had. Overall, he's doing pretty well, but there are still small changes he could make to improve us a bit. - that's about my only critisism.
Everyone knows I was pro-Harry but I honestly didn't realise just how good his stats were with us. Makes me want to rant even more as to why on earth Levy sacked him!
It helps your defensive stats when you have the best English defender in over a decade in your squad(sometimes!).
Sos where was you when we discussed why Harry had to go? AVB is the man for us...early days as pointed out. AVB just needs to carry on reading Not606 and he will be fine. The court case took Harry's eye off the ball and he stopped reading Not606 and it went downhill for him.
SPURM! you're back! search party now needs to focus on TMT and Boss! is that it GH10? I was hoping for a new exciting debate with you at the centre of it!
The percentages over 11 games and over 100 games for Harry and Jol are incomparable and highly misleading, AVB hasn't even played every team in the league yet. From those figures based on games in charge, we can only say AVB is better than Santini...not difficult!
Still think Jol was a better manager than Harry. He pushed us up to 5th position, with some pretty mediocre players: Mido, Jenas and Routledge amongst others. Harry's team had Modric and VdV, possibly two of the best players I've seen in a Spurs shirt (I'm a young'un). AVB hasn't got either of those, and although its still far too early to judge his tenure, he's looking to be a pretty alright manager, barring the substitute problem (which hopefully will get amended at some point).
I remain fairly positive about AVB. The injuries right now are murderous, especially losing the key to your team more or less the moment you found him. One thing really concerns me, and it's the late goals, which I've heard AVB had a problem with at Chelsea. The simplest explanation is that the players aren't fit enough for the running and pressing style they're asked to play, so they run out of gas at the end of the game. Meaning it would be wise to either change the style (poorer alternative) or do more interval training to get them fitter. I'd imagine that having got your team playing twice a week when they played once a week last year, it's pretty hard as a manager to tell them, okay, time to 200 meter runs... My second concern is injuries. See above. Truth is I have no idea to what extent interval training is used by PL teams during the season, though.
I'd suggest that the late goals have more to do with negative substitutions than poor fitness, RWAEB.
I love 60/61, in a manly kind of way of course If you want an opinion, I don't rate any of our managers in the Prem era, they've all let us down. AVB is a clown, and I hope he's out of the club asap. The last proper manager we had was Venables, and he had 'problems' Our best manager was Billy Nick, and even he wasn't up there with Shankly, Busby, Clough, Wenger, Mourinho, Paisley, Ferguson, Wenger and a few others I could mention. We've not been great as far as managers or owners go, but Billy Nick has been the best.
Ghoddle, its nearly impossible to judge a manager today with Billy Nick. The entire spectrum has changed, from the style of play, funds available, availability of players and even how the fans were. Billy Nick's achievement in getting the double, then winning a European trophy, is pretty spectacular considering he would have only had the talent base of the United Kingdom and Ireland (No million pound super subs from Mexico or Africa), whereas today squad depth and overall talent eases the passage of wealthy teams to Doubles/Trebles/European cups. [Edit] Not that I'm saying the achievements of modern managers should be looked down on, it remains extremely difficult to perform such feats in the modern era. I just wanted to show that Billy Nick (although definitely not the greatest) is definitely deserving of a mention with those other names, even if one of the weaker candidates.
