Question for this game. If we win 2-0 and Lazio draw 2-2 with Maribor, then by my calculations Lazio and us will be on 10 points having scored 7 and conceded 3. Head to Head is 2 0-0 draws. So would it be down to toss of a coin who tops the group? What team would people be looking for in this game. For me; Cudicini Walker Vertonghen Caulker Naughton Falque Huddlestone Siggy Townsend Dempsey Ade Resting Sandro, Dembele and Lennon due to excessive games/returning from injury. Carroll/Livermore to come on at half time depending on the state of the game. Could be a risk not playing an out and out defensive midfielder, but Tom needs to stay match sharp, having imroved over recent weeks and Siggy needs to build his confidence after doing well at Fulham.
please log in to view this image I think AVB will give our squad players the opportunity to start, with some of our more experienced players on the bench, just in case things don't go to plan. It's vital for Spurs to progress to the Group Stage in 2013 and I really think we could be in with a great shout of winning the competition, providing that the right amount of attention is given to it. I've never fully understood this "head to head" results rule and when/how it kicks in. - it's a very good question SD As much as I'd like to see squad players given a game, I think AVB will put out or strongest team to try to finish 1st. it's a known fact that he wants us to win it, so I just can't seem him playing squad players in this one. I think he'll hope to get the game won early on, and then bring on the squad players/youngsters once/if we look comfortable.
I'm going to this one so I hope a good win for us.Think maybe Vert needs to be rested(he must be knackered)so maybe Gallas/Caulker for this one.Really would be good to top the group.Come January we will have what will seem like 3 new signings in Kaboul,Parker and Benny and this will give us a great chance of winning the thing.COYS..
It would, but I feel we've missed that trick in both Lazio games, I really cannot see Maribor getting anything against them. Even if they drew, we would need 3 clear goals to beat them on GD...but you never know! Its more likely we'll be 2nd and end up with a CL dropout...Chelsea!
The head to head basically treats it as a 2 legged knockout just looking at the 2 games between the teams and taking into account goal difference. It works well for these short group stages as GD can get skewed by a team that's already out or already through not giving a **** in the last game. So say if we were on the same points as Lazio but had +2 better goal difference and beat Panathaniakos(a team who could've gone through) by a goal and Maribor just rested all their players because they're already out and lost by 4 it'd be harsh that Lazio gained advantage from playing a team who didn't care. If everything finishes the same though, I think it maybe goes down to something obscure like yellow cards or even just the alphabet!
so there is no goal difference, it's down to who has the most points and if 2 teams are equal, it goes on the results of when those two teams played one another? that right?
Yes. Overall GD would count if the head 2 head didn't produce a winner. As we have drawn both games with Lazio 0-0 (not even away goals to seperate us), it won't help in this situtation. As I said at the beginning, there is a feasible set of results where it would be exactltly even on any way of calculating, so I assume coin toss would be needed.
Hope this helps...7.05 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (in descending order): a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; e) if, after having applied criteria a) to d), two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to d) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria f) to h) apply; f) superior goal difference from all group matches played; g) higher number of goals scored from all group matches played; h) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons (see paragraph 9.03)
Nice one. So basically if what SD said happens we'll just wait to find out in the morning once UEFA have worked it out
Ah, thanks mate! I had all the Greek puns ready...Hughzo Lloris, Jake Olivemore, Moussakka Dembele! SD
We should go through on having the most perfectly legitimate goals chalked off for no reason and not embarrassing the whole sport with racist and anti-Semitic crap. I'd like to see a pretty attacking line-up for this game, but with a number of important players benched. Lloris; Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, Naughton; Huddlestone, Carroll; Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Falque; Adebayor.
I am still smarting (or should it be notsosmarting?) at having three perfectly good goals disallowed against the same Italian team in two matches. Not that I am suggesting that there is any corruption in Italian Football.
