Spurs are currently in 4th place in the table on 69 points, while Sunderland are in 17th place with 39 points. This will be the 114th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came at Northumberland Park in March 1898 when Spurs were playing in the Southern League in a friendly which Sunderland won 2-0. A second meeting followed within the year when Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1899. Tottenham's first visit to Sunderland came during a mini tour of the North-East to celebrate the turn of the new Century with Spurs winning the friendly match 3-1 on 2nd January 1900. The first Football League meetings between the two clubs saw Sunderland win at home 3-1 in September 1909 and Spurs having a comprehensive win in the return fixture at White Hart Lane 5-1. Tottenham Hotspur's all-time record attendance of 75,038 at White Hart Lane came in an FA Cup 6th round match against Sunderland in March 1938. Sundeland won the game 1-0. This was the only FA Cup match Sunderland have won out of the 7 played so far with Spurs winning five and one game drawn. The only two League matches ever played outside the Top Flight came during 1977-78 when Spurs won at Roker Park 2-1 but lost the return Division Two match at the Lane 3-2. The clubs first met in the Football League Cup in November 1984 with Spurs drawing 0-0 away but Sunderland winning the replay at the Lane 2-1. The three matches in the competition have resulted in a win each and one game drawn. Since Sunderland joined the Premier League in season 1996-97, no further domestic cup ties have been played between the two clubs. Spurs have a good record during the Premier League Era with 14 wins to Sunderland's 5 and the remaining 4 games drawn. Spurs have taken an average of 2 points off Sunderland in the 23 matches played so far. The 2011-12 fixture at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw with Rafael van der Vaart putting Spurs ahead in the second half only for Sunderland's Asamoah Gyan to equalise three minutes later. The match at Sunderland resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with Asamoah Gyan putting the Black Cats ahead after 11 minutes before Michael Dawson's equaliser just before half-time. Niko Kranjcar scored the winner for Spurs in the 57th minute. Last season's match at White Hart Lane in December resulted in a 1-0 win for Spurs with substitute striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring the winner with just over an hour of the match played. The three points won put Spurs in third place in the table for the first time during 2011-12. The match at Sunderland in April 2012 was a goalless draw which produced very few chances for either team. In August 2012, Tottenham's full-back Danny Rose went to Sunderland for a season's loan and will not be able to play in the match on Sunday. The match at the Stadium of Light in December 2012 was won by Tottenham 2-1. John O'Shea opened the scoring for the Black Cats five minutes before half-time. Carlos Cuellar headed an own goal three minutes into the second half to even the game and Aaron Lennon scored the winner three minutes later for Spurs. Overall, Spurs have the upper hand over Sunderland with 46 wins to 38 and 29 of the 113 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Complete Match Records 1898 - 2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Sunderland... Brilliant thread as ever, THFC!!! Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf mate. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and if you look around the Boards you will see this in spades!!! Cheers
Too close for comfort for me. How can it be so close between a thouroughbred like Spurs and an old donkey like Sunderland? Sleek frigate versus an old tanker. I don't like this team but we can't take it lightly,we beat them 1-2 but because there's so much riding on this for both teams that fact will have to be forgotten. They've sprung surprises like the 0-3 v Chelsea a little while back so let's concentrate bloody hard and get them beaten. Early goal will settle nerves and I'm going for 4-0.
No 2nd chances at this stage - We must win and we MUST take advantage of the absence of Rose, Fletcher, Gardner and Sessegnon. Other than arguably the resurgent Johnson, these are their top players of the season. Just hope that the messages coming from the Newcastle during the game are not too negative and the heads drop....
Perhaps some of those Newcastle players will be playing for a transfer, not for the good of the club? It might be enough for them to put up a fight!
Thanks - very much appreciated! It's going to be a very quiet summer, except for the European U21 Championships in Israel - I'll be there cheering on the Spurs players for England and Germany. Well this is a strange scenario for me, personally. Really like to see you lads make CL, feel you deserve it, but mainly for a great pal of mine who is a Spurs fan and shows that rare thing, as much passion as us poor NE souls for his team. That said, we really ****ing need an Arsenal win Tuesday, and I do feel they will get it, comfortably, against Wigan, who I don't feel deserve to go down as they are greater entertainers than us. That leaves you needing a win due to GD, and needing our beloved, classy neighbours needing to do a job for you to get 4th, and you know what, I think you will get it. Arsenal 3- 0 Wigan Spurs 2 - 1 Sunderland Toon 1 - 1 Arsenal This is how I see it, meaning we survive , Arsenal on 71, and yourselves on 72. I am even backing that as a treble, not a scorecast, but results wise.
We're only safe if Wigan lose mate, although there'd have to be a 12 goal swing if they draw. Realistically, Arsenal will win that game comfortably as Wigan have to try and beat them, and they will get picked off. I genuinely believe that Newcastle v Arsenal is a draw though, and that will be your opportunity.
Would you really be nervous about a 12 goal swing? We aren't going to put 6 past you and Villa aren't going to concede 6 against Wigan. I thought we were a nervous bunch!
To be fair to PP though SD, Villa did put 6 past them recently and conceded 12 in 2 games against us and Chelsea earlier in the season. Extremely unlikely, I'll admit, but I'm sure that we've all thought up worst case scenarios for our recent games, too.
That's why the ideal result for us is a Wigan Arsenal draw. Keeps the pressure off Sunderland in their final game.
I've seen 2 x worst team in history, 4 Wembley defeats, derby thrashings, 3 own goals in one game, and most humiliating of all, defeat to QPR. Believe me mate, as a Sunderland fan, it pays to fear EVERYTHING.
