Spurs finished the 2012-13 season in 5th place in the table on 72 points (a new club Premier League record), while Sunderland finished in 17th place with 39 points. This will be the 115th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came at Northumberland Park in March 1898 when Spurs were playing in the Southern League in a friendly which Sunderland won 2-0. A second meeting followed within the year when Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1899. Tottenham's first visit to Sunderland came during a mini tour of the North-East to celebrate the turn of the new Century with Spurs winning the friendly match 3-1 on 2nd January 1900. The first Football League meetings between the two clubs saw Sunderland win at home 3-1 in September 1909 and Spurs having a comprehensive win in the return fixture at White Hart Lane 5-1. Last season's match at White Hart Lane in December resulted in a 1-0 win for Spurs with substitute striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring the winner with just over an hour of the match played. The three points won put Spurs in third place in the table for the first time during 2011-12. The match at Sunderland in April 2012 was a goalless draw which produced very few chances for either team. In August 2012, Tottenham's full-back Danny Rose went to Sunderland for a season's loan. Amazing how half the "played for both" list has happened in the last 5/6 years, considering the clubs have been playing each other for over 100 years.
May have heard him wrong but did AVB say that Chadli couldn't play in the interview he gave yesterday? Is this correct? If so why? Surely you don't have to register players for a friendly tournament, do you?
Hoping that South China pull off an upset - partly because it would be funny, but mostly because I remember one of these pre-season tournaments was set up for Celtic to win and be on the cover of the sponsors' prospectuses for the next year...only for St Patricks to win the thing instead. Seeing a whole bunch of Barclays executives cheering us on against Sunderland would be quite amusing.
These Bale rumours will just get worse the longer he is out as it will be reported we don't want to risk him to jeopardise the transfer. Wheel him out in a wheelchair i say.
No, he has looked better though... http://d2srvtdub1i1qz.cloudfront.net/event/IA656080/IA656080_default.jpg
Just heard that Fox Sports are showing the game tonight -prime time 8pm Apparently its on Sky as well - anyone else going to watch?
Gomes; Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Rose; Huddlestone, Lennon, Parker; Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Adebayor. Subs: Friedel, Lloris, Assou-Ekotto, Fryers, Naughton, Vertonghen, Carroll, Townsend, Defoe
As Gomes is in goal he must be our first choice goalkeeper for next season in the same way Bale isn't playing meaning he is definitely signing for Real Madrid.
Official word: Kick-off has been delayed until 11.30am UK (6.30pm local) and we'll play two 40-minute halves in Hong Kong. Great bit of branding for the Premier League, eh?
Pitch flooded, if they play reduced to 40 mins each way- IF! horrible conditions better if they don't play someone might get injured.
