Sunderland, who were the first club outside the original 12 members to join the Football League, host Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light in the 20th round of Premier League matches on Saturday 29th December 2012, KO 12:45.

Sunderland are currently in 13th place in the table on 22 points, while Spurs are in 4th place with 33 points.

This will be the 113th time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came at Northumberland Park in March 1898 when Spurs were playing in the Southern League in a friendly which Sunderland won 2-0.

A second meeting followed with the year when Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1899.

Tottenham's first visit to Sunderland came during a mini tour of the North-East to celebrate the turn of the new Century with Spurs winning the friendly match 3-1 on 2nd January 1900.

The first Football League meetings between the two clubs saw Sunderland win at home 3-1 in September 1909 and Spurs having a comprehensive win in the return fixture at White Hart Lane 5-1.

Tottenham Hotspur's all-time record attendance of 75,038 at White Hart Lane came in an FA Cup 6th round match against Sunderland in March 1938. Sundeland won the game 1-0. This was the only FA Cup match Sunderland have won out of the 7 played so far with Spurs winning five and one game drawn.

The only two League matches ever played outside the Top Flight came during 1977-78 when Spurs won at Roker Park 2-1 but lost the return Division Two match at the Lane 3-2.

The clubs first met in the Football League Cup in November 1984 with Spurs drawing 0-0 away but Sunderland winning the replay at the Lane 2-1.
The three matches in the competition have resulted in a win each and one game drawn.

Since Sunderland joined the Premier League in season 1996-97, no further domestic cup ties have been played between the two clubs.

Spurs have a good record during the Premier League Era with 13 wins to Sunderland's 5 and the remaining 3 games drawn. Spurs have taken an average of 2 points off Sunderland in the 21 matches played so far.

The 2011-12 fixture at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw with Rafael van der Vaart putting Spurs ahead in the second half only for Sunderland's Asamoah Gyan to equalise three minutes later. The match at Sunderland resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with Asamoah Gyan putting the Black Cats ahead after 11 minutes before Michael Dawson's equaliser just before half-time. Niko Kranjcar scored the winner for Spurs in the 57th minute.

Last season's match at White Hart Lane in December resulted in a 1-0 win for Spurs with substitute striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring the winner with just over an hour of the match played. The three points won put Spurs in third place in the table for the first time during 2011-12. The match at Sunderland in April 2012 was a goalless draw which produced very few chances for either team.

Overall, Spurs have the upper hand over Sunderland with 45 wins to 38 and 29 of the 112 matches played so far drawn.

    Paul Stewart, again. <ok>
    Another top thread, 6061.

Can see this being a tough one. Early kick off, miles away from home...
No Rose for them, which seems to be pretty important, if the reaction of their fans is anything to go by. He missed the Man Utd game and they got battered.

Sunderland had a great win at home against Manchester City, so they'll be fired-up for Saturday's game.

But I think they will be vulnerable to counter-attacks, especially with Danny Rose absent.

I'm going for a Spurs win by the odd goal in three.

We got beat 3-1 at Old Trafford, but we created a lot of chances against them, so I wouldn't call it a battering. As for Rose, our fans have really taken to him and he will be a miss agaist you...I'm expecting a very tough game which could go either way...
    PS...Great info there THFC..<ok>

Sunderland should keep Rose on loan....forever, as he is no doubt one of these many players that goes out on loan, plays a blinder week in, week out, gets a permanent deal and then reverts back to being CRAP!

......(he wasn't that bad), just never really showed much potential and reminds me of when O'Hara went out on loan and looked to be a fab player.

Provisional squad: Friedel, Lloris, Gomes, Cudicini, Walker, Naughton, Assou-Ekotto, Gallas, Caulker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Townsend, Bale, Falque, Carroll, Mason, Livermore, Sandro, Huddlestone, Dembele, Parker, Dempsey, Adebayor, Defoe.

Nice to see BAE and Dempsey back in contention.

It all depends on Benny's sharpness and general condition but assuming he's unable to start, I'd go with: Lloris; Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, Naughton; Parker, Dembele; Lennon, Sig, Bale; Defoe. Give Sandro a rest, keep a striker on the bench and give Sigurdsson a reward for coming into games and making an impact. It's not easy to come on as a sub, you have to get to grips with the game very quickly whilst trying to impress which is why I think Sig deserves a start after taking being dropped so well and working hard to get back in the team.

YV in principle I'd agree if we were at home.
But as we are away (again- who created this stupid fixture list) I think Andre will stick with basically the same lineup.
We need to keep this unbeaten run going- the only change I would make Dawson for Gallas Verts to LB.

Ive got too agree with YV here. 4-5-1 is more stable, packing out the midfield against a team with confidence is a must, then hit them on the break with Azza and Bale. Bring BAE on at 60-70mins to get some fitness. With Caulker and Verts I cant see them scoring.

Villas Boas doesnt play counter attacking football, he sets us up to play a high line, we huff and puff but fail to break the wall down.

Villas boas then squats, ponders, the opposition start to come into the game and we hit them on the counter.

on second thoughts, Cunning plan :D

But in all seriousness, I want to see us play 4231 with carroll in the centre ( with sandro) and dembele slightly forward which depending on how you view it, is 451 or 4231.

BAE coming back will be a big plus especially for Bale and Vertonghen.

No surprise that Andy Reids pic is the widest in the row. :)

So I just saw a list of players that are on four yellow cards and the Sunderland game is the last day that a booking would mean a ban:

    Bale
    Vertonghen
    Sandro
    Defoe

Is that not also a potential list for Player of the Season so far?

So it'd be annoying if any of that lot got booked...

Cheers again 6061. Great thread as usual. - I actually saw this on twitter the other day. - a user profile called something like "my footy facts" - is that you?! or is someone stealing your thunder? <laugh>

As has been said, tough game today. Rose seems to be having a blinder for Sunderland at the moment, so his absence will be make a huge difference to how Sunderland play.

I expect our form to continue today and don't see Sunderland causing us too many problems.

    Sunderland 0 - 2 Tottenham.

I think it's inevitable, Lenny. In the very near future too.

The other concern is that in front of goal it's the "Bale and Defoe show". The goals are hardly coming from anywhere else. We need Lennon, Dembele and Sandro to start mucking in. Both Dembele and Sandro can shoot from outside the box and Lennon needs to just have a strike every now and again. He seems to have no confidence in front of goal.

No, that's me (it's the name of my footy stats site).

I use MyFootballFacts on Twitter as not everything I cover is about Tottenham Hotspur.

To be honest it bugs me when we keep shooting from distance. The trouble is that we have Bale, Defoe, Dempsey/Sig, Dembele, Sandro, Walker and Vertonghen all on the pitch at times and they all rotate who gets to fluff the next attack by shooting early which, apart from when Bale hits it, usually ends in the stands.

I worry about relying on Bale a bit too. He tends to look tired playing a game soon after he's had a really good game, it's not that he's unfit but there's only so many lung busting runs anyone can make in a game. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a bad game today, although at the sametime he could prove me wrong as he might not be so tired since he didn't do much tracking back against Villa. Lazy git <grr>

Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Naughton, Lennon, Dembele, Sandro, Bale, Adebayor, Defoe

Subs: Friedel, Vertoghen, Huddestone, Livermore, Parker, Dempsey & Sigurdsson

Resting Vertonghen? Don't agree with that or 442. Oh well :(

I think Villas-Boas might give Assou-Ekotto a few reserve run-outs before he's reintroduced to the first XI, Spurf. He did it with Parker.
Makes long-term sense, I guess. Still like to see us get some back-up for him in January, even if it meant a loan or recalling Rose.
