Spurs come into the game in 2nd place on 12 points with Chelsea in 4th place on 10 points. This will be the 191st time the two teams have met each other. Chelsea are one of the few major English football teams who never played Spurs during the Victorian Era, as they were only founded in 1905 and were admitted into the Second Division of the Football League without ever having played a match before. This was due to the rivalry that existed at the time between the Football League and the Southern League with the former desperate to make in-roads into the lucrative markets which London and the South-East provided. The first meeting between Spurs and Chelsea was a friendly played at Stamford Bridge in February 1908 and ended in a 2-2 draw. The same venue saw the first Football League Division One encounter in December 1909 and Chelsea won that match 2-1. The return fixture at White Hart Lane was won by Spurs 2-1 and in between those two matches the clubs met in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in a match which Spurs won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Spurs and Chelsea would meet for another three seasons in the First Division before the outbreak of World War One with honours even at two wins for Spurs, two wins for Chelsea and two drawn matches. 14 games were played during the First World War and these featured many players who 'guested' for both clubs. Five of Tottenham's "home" games were played at Arsenal's Highbury Stadium. Spurs and Chelsea had finished in the bottom two places in the last season of the First Division when war broke out and when football resumed in 1919, the Division was expanded from 20 to 22 teams. Arsenal engineered a 'promotion' to the First Division at Spurs' expense but Tottenham easilly won the Division Two Championship and the next season had two emphatic wins over Chelsea 5-0 at home and 4-0 at the Bridge. The teams would meet for another five seasons in the First Division and two seasons in the Second Division during the inter-war period - season 1929-30 was the last time Spurs & Chelsea played League games outside the Top Flight of English Football. Spurs only lost two of those 14 League matches. During World War Two, 16 games were played between Spurs and Chelsea Spurs returned to the First Division in season 1950-51 and did the 'double' over Chelsea winning 2-0 away and 2-1 at home on their way to the first Football League Championship. Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea contested the first all-London FA Cup Final in 1967 at Wembley with Spurs winning 2-1 thanks to goals scored by Jimmy Robertson and Frank Saul. The first meeting in the Football League Cup came in the 1971-72 Semi-Finals with Chelsea winning the first leg at Stamford Bridge 3-2 and Spurs only managing a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane. Both clubs were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and both have been ever-present for the 21 seasons of the competition, along with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United. Chelsea have very much had the upper hand during the Premier League Era with 23 wins to Tottenham's 3 with the remaining 15 matches drawn. A second domestic Cup Final was contested in 2008 when Spurs beat Chelsea in the Football League (Carling) Cup Final 2-1 after extra time at Wembley. A Dimitar Berbatov penalty and a Jonathan Woodgate header ensured the silverware would once again reside in North London. The 2010-11 fixture in December at White Hart Lane resulted in a 1-1 draw with Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring for Spurs after 15 minutes and Didier Drogba getting Chelsea's equaliser after 70 minutes. Drogba's injury time penalty was saved by Heurelho Gomes. The reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge in April was won by Chelsea 2-1 with Spurs taking a 19th minute lead through Sandro and Frank Lampard equalising on half time. Salomon Kalou scored the winner after 89 minutes. The 2011-12 match at White Hart Lane in December resulted in a 1-1 draw with Emmanuel Adebayor putting Spurs ahead after 8 minutes and Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge getting the equaliser in the 23rd minute. The game at Stamford Bridge in March ended in a goalless draw. Chelsea won the 2012 FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley 5-1 with the turning-point coming from a 49th minute Juan Mata goal which never crossed the line. Didier Drogba had put the Blues ahead just before the interval and Spurs managed to pull a goal back in the 56th minute through Gareth Bale. Three further goals from Ramares, Lampard and Malouda were added for Chelsea. Andre Villas-Boas was sacked as Chelsea's manager in March 2012 and became the manager of Tottenham Hotspur on 3rd July 2012. The match at White Hart Lane in October 2012 was won by Chelsea 4-2. A Gary Cahill volly after 17 minutes was the only goal of the first half and Spurs went ahead with goals from William Gallas and Jermain Defoe. A brace from Juan Mata and a Daniel Sturridge goal gave Chelsea the three points. The teams drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge in May 2013 with Oscar opening the scoring after 10 minutes and Emmanuel Adebayor getting the equaliser after 26 minutes. Ramires put Chelsea ahead again after 39 minutes but Gylfi Sigurdsson scored 10 minutes from the end. Overall, Spurs have won 68, Chelsea have won 74 and 48 of the 190 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea Matches 1908-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Chelsea.... WY posted that lampard is out, good news if true as hes still a goal threat but chelsea seem to be having a crisis of sort, yet are still right behind us. We have been getting the results yet if our only two defeats come against Arsenal and then Chelsea,it would dampen the start for me, as with the money invested you would expect us to beat teams like Palace, Norwich and Cardiff. Yet the teams we're aiming to beat or at least compete with, arsenal and Chelsea, means these games say alot about the team, so we definitely at least need to compete and impose ourselves, otherwise theres a chance we're only looking good against poor teams. Anyhow, looking forward to this game and seeing if we can have a real go, but also remain smart as last year we gifted Chelsea a ton of space on the counter, lets hope Avb has learnt his lesson.
Huge game, one of my favourites of the year as I don't know that many Chelsea fans. With the NLD I'm too worried about losing to enjoy it as most of my friends are Goons. No better time to play them as they're still finding their feet and Maureen hasn't come to appreciate Mata yet.
Holtby really showed what he's got in his locker tonight. I remember at the start of the window having some debate with roo about our need for a creative playmaker and whether holtby was the answer to that problem. The conclusion was maybe but we couldn't afford to take the risk this year. Especially when it ended up that eriksen was such a bargain. Now, well... What a wonderful problem to have if they're both performing which is what we hoped for. If rose were playing I'd potentially try holtby out on that left side, he's done it before at shalke, it's just whether he can play as well out wide as he can in the middle. Can't play him there if naughton's playing though.. Shambles when everyone cuts inside on that left flank. Give soldado the start and 60 mins to see what he does. He's played well and been unlucky. Defoe - sub and after this game deserves a start if bobby doesn't fire. Paulinho is a must. As I think is Sandro to help back 4 and stifle their creativity. Harsh on dembele as his most recent game against Cardiff was excellent but that's the price of a decent squad! If we're chasing bringing him on for Sandro could be an idea. Eriksen and maybe holtby as well to start? Who knows. Give Townsend one more go as cole will eat lamela alive. Cole is going to cause us problems this game I suspect. Either way, a good game in the making!
I agree we need to wait for Rose to come back to start Holtby on the left. I disagree about Dembele/Sandro. Sandro isn't quite back to his best yet, and Dembele-Paulinho has been outstanding for us so far. It's certainly tempting to give Holtby/Defoe a shot at some point, not because Eriksen and Soldado haven't been good, but because Holtby and Defoe have been fantastic. I'm not sure how I feel about Lamela vs. Townsend. The intrigue here of course is master vs. apprentice. I'm not so sure Mourinho and AVB have such different footballing ideas. I'm not so sure their squads are so different either; both may be relying on one Belgian and one Brazilian midfielder, a Spanish striker and an English fullback. Chelsea may have a few more creative players, we definitely are bigger and stronger. The date no doubt is circled in AVB's mind. We'll see if we're ready at this point to take another meaningful step forward.
Holtby and Defoe have been outstanding against inferior opposition and while they are both players I like and rate their importance to the squad, if we started with them both I expect it would end badly and Holtby especially would be labeled as being out of his depth. This is the type of game where we will miss Bale and Lennon, Bale for his direct running and big game performance and Lennon for not just his pace, but also tracking back, hes possibly the hardest working winger in the league. As for Dembele, he looked lost against Arsenal and has impressed in patches yet again I worry he will go into his shell against quality opposition, thats always the test for a player, how do they perform when a quality team is setup to make life difficult. This is why Sandro is favoured by alot of fans, hes proven in big games, and draws from these experiences so even if you feel he isn't fully ready, Sandro won't let anyone down as he has that inner belief to perform at key stages. Anyhow I expect Avb will start with Dembele so thats just a discussion on who us the fans prefer and overall its nice we have so many options, makes competition healthy and pushes players to perform.
I look at it this way. What's the better achievement, to win 0-2 at Swindon or 0-4 at Villa and the answer tells me which of the two clubs is playing the more effective football. Yes they are just behind us but were lucky against Villa and should have three points fewer.
I'd start with Defoe. Good work deserves rewarding. If he starts and doesn't fire then maybe a part of him will make him realise that being an impact sub maybe where he is at his best in the PL these days. It will also press a button in Soldado's mind which says ' I may have cost 28 mill, but its goals that will get me games'. No goal for Defoe after an hour then we can replace him with Soldado. Therein lies an education for them both and prosperous returns for Spurs.
that premierleague record is still horrible reading. Its gonna take decades or centuries to right that wrong.
Ban news for us, Lampard's the kind of player that just seems to turn up with the goods when they need it. I'm sure he'll be at least on the bench. I figured it would be a fairly open game but the Chelsea fans disagree. I can't see any reason for us to be too cautious, as much as a draw would be a good result a loss wouldn't be devastating and I think AVB would rather we go for it. Chelsea might be the more reserved side but they can still cause you problems on the counter as they've shown on several occasions over the years. I'm hoping they play with Cahill and Terry in defence, I think Soldado, in particular would thrive on having an extra half a yard at times to cause them problems. We'll need our defence to be at their best though and the fullbacks in particular, it's hard to know how to deal the likes of Hazard/Willian/De Bruyne cutting inside and fullbacks overlapping. I still think it'll be a good game with both sides causing problems.
Funny how times have changed. Spurs has now a more powerhouse midfield and Chelsea have a more creative and skillfull midfield. It'll be interesting to see who controls the midfield, but my guess is Spurs will have the edge. Against Arsenal, the Spurs midfield kept possession well and broke up play and I can see it going simularly against Chelsea. Is it too early for Spurs? Maybe. But we will have to see how the creative players - Ericksen, Holtby and Paulinho link up with your front-line players, who themselves are still acclimatising to the Prem. We are yet to see Lamela play anywhere close to his ability.
i heard that this is the first time AVB has faced Mourinho. Seems strange, but then i think its more than likely true.
